Since the 2016 Global Strategy, the EU is on a journey to become a more active and particularly more recognised global player, recognising that security has become indivisible and that this needs a comprehensive engagement, in Asia and the Indo-Pacific region respectively. Russia’s war of aggression and the need to repel this attack on European ground puts the EU’s commitment as well as capacity to deliver at a test. A test not to fail otherwise the reputational damage will be great, all the talk about ‘strategic autonomy’ futile and the dependence on the US to deepen.
Thereby the EU needs to overcome an erroneous perception that it is a newcomer to Asia and that it has neglected the region because of a too narrow European perspective.
