Graduates. Today, we leave TUJ and then go out into the world searching for what’s next. We worked and struggled, and sacrificed and studied, and dreamed our way here today.
To the incredible parents, family, and friends who may have traveled long distances to celebrate with us, let me say to you “Thank you and 日本へようこそ、welcome to Japan. It’s been waiting for you” To the dean and the administration, thank you for having a campus in this beautiful country. You make people’s dreams come true through education.
To the faculty, thank you for constantly challenging our minds.
Not a single one of us here today has done it alone. There was always someone who gave us moral support, or proofread our writing, or gave us feedback on our drafts for class projects. I hope that if they are in this hall today, each graduate here finds their own way to express their gratitude for all the support that has led us to this common destination.
There is a story behind each of our undergraduate, masters, or PhD degrees. A story that gives meaning to what we have accomplished. Let me tell you a little bit about my story. I am from a small town in southern Spain. I grew up kicking a ball around on the streets of my neighborhood. My parents are working class. They grew up in rural Spain in the 1950s. My father started working washing glasses in a bar at the age of eight and my mother helped her mother with the housework. They did not even finish elementary school. With this background, it is a great privilege to address you on our day, a day marking one of the most important accomplishments in our lives. Finally, I could not leave this stage without acknowledging a professor who passed on to the other side two years ago, Dr. Steven Ross. His lessons continue to enlighten many of us to this day. He was essential in helping me get to this stage.
Graduates, the future is here. Thank you.
卒業生の皆さん。今日、私たちはTUJ（テンプル大学ジャパンキャンパス）を後にし、次なる道を探して世界へ飛び立ちます。私たちは努力と苦労を重ね、犠牲を払い、学び、そして今日この場に立つことを夢見てきました。
遠方から私たちのお祝いに駆けつけてくれた素晴らしい両親、家族、友人たちに「ありがとう、そして日本へようこそ。日本はあなた方を待っていました」と伝えたいと思います。学長と大学運営陣の皆様、この美しい国にキャンパスを設けていただきありがとうございます。皆様は教育を通して人々の夢を実現させています。
教員の皆様、常に私たちの心に挑み続けてくださりありがとうございます。今日ここにいる私たちの誰一人として、自分だけの力でここまで来た者はいません。精神的な支えとなってくれた方、文章を校正してくれた方、授業プロジェクトの下書きにフィードバックをくれた方が常にいました。もしこの方々が今日この会場にいるなら、卒業生が、自分たちをこの共通の目的地へと導いた全てのサポートに自分なりの感謝の意を伝える方法を見つけることを願っています。
私たちの学士号、修士号、博士号の一つ一つには、それぞれ物語があります。それは私たちが成し遂げたことに意味を与える物語です。私の物語を少しお話しさせてください。私はスペイン南部の小さな町の出身です。近所の通りでボールを蹴って育ちました。私の両親は労働者階級で、1950年代のスペインの田舎で育ちました。父は8歳の時にバーでグラスを洗う仕事を始め、母は家事を手伝っていました。彼らは小学校さえ卒業していません。このような背景を持つ私が、人生における最も重要な成果の一つを記念するこの日に、皆様に向けてお話しできることを大変光栄に思います。最後に、2年前に他界された教授、スティーブン・ロス博士に感謝の意を表さずにこの場を去ることはできません。彼の教えは今日も私たちの多くを啓発し続けています。彼は私がこの舞台に立つために不可欠な存在でした。
