Thomas J. Dreves is the General Counsel at Temple University, Japan Campus.

He advises the President/Dean and senior management team about all legal, regulatory, compliance, strategic, and risk-related issues as well as managing all aspects of the timely delivery of quality legal services. In addition, his responsibilities include:

  • Risk assessment, dispute resolution, student conduct issues, and crisis management
  • Interface and coordination with legal counsel at main campus in Philadelphia.
  • Oversight and management of outside counsel, associate counsel, and interns.
  • Responsible for all university contracts. Contracts encompassed employment, confidentiality, licenses and sublicenses, facilities, corporate and academic affiliations, and other matters.
  • General assistance with compliance, corporate governance, accounting, and audits.
  • Management of intellectual property matters and personal data protection issues
  • Formulation and implementation of internal policies, standards, rules, and procedures.
  • Assist with government relations in relation to immigration, employment, and operations.

Prior to his arrival at TUJ, Mr. Dreves had long experience as a legal adviser within and to top global banks, securities firms and corporations.

He received his J.D. from Harvard Law School, and completed his undergraduate education magna cum laude at Georgetown University, where he majored in Government and was admitted to Phi Betta Kappa as a junior. Dreves was born and raised in the Seattle, Washington area. He has divided his professional career chiefly between Tokyo and New York City, with over twenty-five years of professional service in Japan. He is father to three sons and has five grandchildren.
