My friends, it is my great privilege to represent you one last time as your commencement speaker.
It was my second day in Japan, I was a nineteen year old kid who had never left America or lived alone, and I remember feeling utterly overwhelmed, terrified, and in over my head. I decided to go to a local baseball field to try and get some reminder of home and on the way back to my dorm I came across a local sushi restaurant. I was not even sure if I could communicate with the staff or if I would be allowed in as a foreigner, but I decided to be brave and embrace the adventure. Striking up a conversation with the owner, I ended up talking with him and his family that ran the restaurant until midnight. I made it a habit thereafter to visit every Saturday and came to be accepted as a part of the family who showered me with delicious food and affectionately referred to me as Soren-kun.
I mention this story because I believe it encapsulates something of the spirit of TUJ. TUJ is in no stretch of the imagination a “normal” school as chances are if you end up here you are different at least in so far as your willingness to venture out and be an outsider. You simply do not come to TUJ by conventional means; If you are a Japanese student you are studying in an unorthodox American environment, if you are American you are choosing to spend your college life abroad, and if you are from any of the 80 other countries you are doing both! This boldness is not limited to our students, as the more you get to know faculty and staff you will find that their stories are more diverse than their expertise. But I believe this forms an essential characteristic of the peculiarity of TUJ in that it is a community of outsiders, literally gaijin. But this should not diminish from the fact that there is something terrifying about venturing out on your own into a foreign environment and learning how to solve it.
The central ingredient to overcoming this fear and difference is an accepting culture that permeates throughout our community. Growing up I was made to feel like an outsider and could always count my friends on one hand. But when I came to TUJ I encountered a community where for the first time my difference was celebrated rather than criticized. In a community of outsiders we are encouraged to drop our prejudices and judgements at the door and really see people for who they are in all of their peculiarities, because we want and need the same. TUJ has a way of making you comfortable being uncomfortable, and normalizing the abnormal. But I hope you feel like I do that this environment gives you the confidence to recklessly be yourself. Knowing that despite all your faults, weirdness, and peculiarity you are accepted and celebrated for who you are is a powerful freedom unlike any other.
Being accepted as outsiders and seeing the fruits of service nurture our development as international citizens. Now more than ever in a world that is turning away from internationalism and towards the winds of conflict and polarization we need a new generation of young leaders that are passionate about service and embracing differing perspectives. We live in a broken world with desperate need of repair to its institutions and societies, and whether fairly or not the burden of fixing it falls on our shoulders.
TUJ develops the skills necessary to navigate these problems in your own unique ways, and the time will soon come when you are called on to use them. The most valuable things we learn at TUJ do not come in the classroom, it comes through the environment. What I have always said about TUJ is that it is what you make of it, and that applies to our lives too doesn't it. This is not the last time you will be thrown into terrifying circumstances and foreign and uncomfortable environments. In fact, the stakes will only get higher from here. But there is something powerful in that we have chosen to face this challenge, and that choice belongs to each and every one of you. If you want to succeed at TUJ you have to be brave and okay with being different, and many of you by virtue of making that choice have already demonstrated your ability to do so.
People have probably asked you all if you will miss TUJ, and while you might not miss the schoolwork or busyness, I hope that you all can say that you will miss this community. There are days I wish I would never have to leave this community (and I know there are some people here on stage who feel the same) but I would challenge you all that it is our job to carry the values of this community with us into the world in order to build new communities. TUJ will always be a place we can come back to, but I believe the best way to honor it is by sharing the serving and accepting values it represents with a world desperately in need of them.
TUJ is a community that celebrates individuals who are willing to be brave and take risks in their lives. Because sometimes when you take a risk you will walk into a Sushi bar a stranger, but come out as family.
My friends, take care of yourselves and take care of each other. Let us walk out of here today and take TUJ with us.
友人の皆さん、卒業式のスピーカーとして最後に皆さんを代表できることは、私にとって大変光栄なことです。
日本に来て2日目のことです。私はアメリカを離れたことも一人で暮らしたこともない19歳の若者でした。圧倒され、怯え、どうしようもない状況にあると感じていたことを覚えています。故郷を思い出すために地元の野球場に行った私は、寮への帰り道に地元の寿司屋に立ち寄りました。店員と意思疎通ができるのか、外国人の私が入店を許されるのかさえ確信が持てませんでしたが、勇気を出して冒険に踏み出しました。店主と会話を始めたところ、結局、彼と店で働く彼の家族とで真夜中まで話し込むことになりました。それ以降、毎週土曜日に店を訪れることが習慣となり、美味しい料理で私を歓迎し、家族の一員として受け入れ「ソレン君」と親しみを込めて呼んでくれるようになりました。
この話をするのは、それがTUJの精神の一端を表していると思うからです。TUJは決して「普通」の学校ではありません。なぜなら、ここに来る人は少なくとも冒険に出て「部外者」になる意欲があるという点で、一般とは異なるからです。単に慣例的な方法でTUJに来ることはありません。日本人学生であれば、アメリカの異質な環境で学ぶことになりますし、アメリカ人学生であれば、海外での大学生活を選ぶことになります。そして他の80カ国から来た人々は、その両方を経験しています！この大胆さは学生だけに限りません。教職員の皆様をよく知るほど、彼らが専門知識以上に多様な経歴を持っていることがわかるでしょう。しかし、これこそがTUJの特異性の本質的な特徴を形作っていると思います。それは「部外者」のコミュニティ、文字通り「外人」のコミュニティであるということです。ただし、一人で異国の環境に飛び込み、それに対処する方法を学ぶことには恐ろしさがつきまとうという事実を軽視すべきではありません。
この恐怖と違いを乗り越えるための中心的な要素となるのが、私たちのコミュニティ全体に浸透している受容的な文化です。幼い頃、私は自分を部外者のように感じ、友達は常に片手で数えられるほどしかいませんでした。しかしTUJに来て、初めて私の「違い」が批判されるのではなく称えられるコミュニティに出会いました。
部外者のコミュニティでは、偏見や判断を捨て去り、人々をその特異性すべてを含めて本当の姿で見ることが奨励されています。なぜなら、私たちも同じことを望み、必要としているからです。TUJには、居心地の悪さを快適にし、異常を正常とする方法があります。この環境があなたに自分自身を思い切り表現する自信を与えてくれるよう願っています。あなたのすべての欠点、変わっている点、特異さにもかかわらず、あなたがあなた自身として受け入れられ、称えられていることを知ることは、他に類を見ない強力な自由です。
部外者として受け入れられ、奉仕の成果を見ることは、国際的な市民としての成長を促します。今、国際主義から離れ、紛争と分極化へと向かう世界において、私たちは奉仕に情熱を持ち、異なる視点を受け入れる新世代の若いリーダーを必要としています。私たちは制度や社会の修復が切実に必要な壊れた世界に生きており、公平か否かにかかわらず、修復の責任は私たちの肩にかかっています。
TUJは、これらの問題に独自の方法で対処するために必要なスキルを育成します。そのスキルを使うよう求められる時はすぐに来るでしょう。TUJで学ぶ最も価値のあることは教室の中ではなく、環境を通じて得られます。TUJについて私がいつも言ってきたのは、TUJはあなたの捉え方次第であり、私たちの人生にもそれは当てはまるということです。恐ろしい状況や異質で居心地の悪い環境に投げ込まれるのはこれが最後ではありません。実際、ここからはさらに大きな賭けが待っています。しかし、私たちがこの挑戦に立ち向かうことを「選んだ」ことは力強いことであり、その選択は皆さん一人ひとりのものです。TUJで成功したいなら、勇気を持ち、違いを受け入れる必要があります。そして、皆さんの多くは挑戦を選択をすることで、すでにそれができる能力を示しています。
皆さんはTUJを離れたらさびしく思うかと尋ねられたことがあるでしょう。学業や忙しさを恋しく思うことはないかもしれませんが、このコミュニティを離れてさびしいと言えるよう願っています。このコミュニティから離れたくないと思う日もあります（そして、ステージ上の何人かの人たちも同じ気持ちだと知っています）。しかし、新しいコミュニティを構築するためにTUJのコミュニティの価値観を世界に持ち出すことが私たちの仕事だと考え、挑戦したいと思います。TUJは私たちがいつでも戻ってこられる場所ですが、TUJを称えるための最良の方法は、TUJが象徴する奉仕と受容の価値観を、それらを切実に必要としている世界と共有することだと信じています。
TUJは、勇気を持って人生のリスクを取ろうとする個人を称えるコミュニティです。なぜなら、時にリスクを取ることで、見知らぬ人として入った寿司屋から、その店の家族として出てくることもあるからです。
友人の皆さん、自分自身を大切にし、お互いを大切にしてください。TUJを私たちと共に連れ、今日ここから歩き出しましょう。
