Good evening graduates, faculty, and professors.
When I was six years old, I moved to Japan from my hometown in Italy and attended an international school. I didn’t speak any English when I arrived to kindergarten, and my teachers told my parents that I communicated with my hands to ask for things. And no, not through sign language. Just hand gestures, pure Italian instinct.
It is an honor for me to stand here today and represent the Class of 2025.
I think we can all recall an experience in a new environment and our first days at school. We all remember our first time here at TUJ, the nervous jitters during orientation, and running around to find the right classrooms.
The questions we hesitated to ask in class but chose to speak up anyway, those times we hit submit on our Canvas assignment at 11:59 PM, and the days leading up to finals bothering professors about what was going to be on the test. (Sorry, professors)
Each one of these little things, at the time, may have felt insignificant and small, but they are the exact moments that shaped who we are on this commencement day.
Today, I would like to talk about uncertainty and how it connects to these little things. Uncertainty is something that is often perceived negatively in today's world. Many of us may feel that we need to have a perfect plan after graduation, or know our immediate next steps. The truth is, some of the best things in life happen when you have no idea what you're doing, but you go for it anyway - just like that 11:59 PM Canvas assignment submission.
Whether you know exactly where you're headed or you're still figuring it out, it’s the little things that will matter. The ordinary actions that push you outside your comfort zone. The choices that don’t seem like a big deal in the moment but will end up sticking with you in the long run.
There won’t always be one big moment that unlocks everything. Most of the time, it will be a bunch of small steps. And those small steps are what add up and lead to the things you’re most proud of, like today.
It will be the friend you met in the parliament because you took a chance and said “hello,” the random elective that changed your career path, or the day you decided to join an event or take part in something social, even though you didn’t know anyone and weren't sure what to expect. But you did it anyway, and that small action made a difference.
Small steps build momentum, and as we look ahead, I want to urge all of you to give yourself the permission to be wildly ambitious. Whatever that means to you. Set goals that scare you, but don’t get caught up in trying to achieve them all at once. Focus on the small things you can actually do. That's what will move you forward, even if you don't notice it right away.
Most importantly, as you chase these ambitions, self-reflect and appreciate the people around you. Spread positive energy, because it will always find its way back.
During my time at TUJ, I had the privilege of being involved in student initiatives like the Program Board. The work we did allowed me to visit our campus in Rome and meet hundreds of fellow students. Whether it was a quick chat after an event or working with different faculty departments, every little action taught me something new and turned me into who I am today.
Over these last four years, TUJ has been more than just a place where we submitted our assignments and executed these little things. TUJ has provided a community that has challenged us, supported us, and changed us in ways we would have never predicted when we first stepped on campus. The people sitting next to you right now and this community will forever be a point of reference for everything we will go on to chase and achieve in life.
I would like to thank my mom, my dad, my younger brother, TUJ faculty, and all of my friends and peers for having made these last years so memorable.
Remember, dream big, but execute in baby steps. Cherish and recognize these small steps, because they are never as small as they seem.

卒業生の皆さん、教職員・教授の皆様、こんばんは。
私は6歳の時に、故郷のイタリアから日本に移り住み、インターナショナルスクールに通いました。幼稚園に入った時、私は英語を全く話せず、先生たちは両親に、私が物を求める時に手で意思表示していたと伝えました。いいえ、手話ではありません。純粋なイタリア人の本能であるジェスチャーにすぎませんでした。
その私が今日ここに立ち、2025年のクラスを代表できることは名誉なことです。
私たちは皆、新しい環境で経験したことや学校での最初の日々を思い出せると思います。ここTUJでの最初の日、オリエンテーションで緊張したこと、そして正しい教室を見つけるために走り回ったことを皆覚えているでしょう。
授業で質問するのをためらいながらも結局発言することを選んだこと、Canvasの課題を午後11時59分に提出したこと、そして試験に何が出るのか悩み教授に迷惑をかけながら期末試験に向けて準備した日々。（教授の皆様、すみません）
これらの小さなことの一つ一つは、その時点では取るに足らない小さなことに思えたかもしれませんが、それらはまさに今日の卒業式を迎える私たちを形作った瞬間なのです。
今日、私は不確実性について、そしてそれがこれらの小さなことにどのように関連しているかについてお話ししたいと思います。不確実性は今日の世界ではしばしばネガティブに捉えられています。私たちの多くが卒業後には完璧な計画を立てておくべきだ、または次に踏み出す一歩を明確に理解しておくべきだと感じているかもしれません。実際のところは、人生で最高の出来事のいくつかは、自分が何をしているのか全く分からないけれど、とにかくやってみる時に起こります - ちょうど午後11時59分のCanvas課題提出のように。
あなたが正確に自分の向かう先を知っていても、まだ模索中であっても、小さなことこそが大切なのです。普通の行動があなたを快適ゾーンの外に押し出します。その瞬間には大したことに思えなくても、長い目で見るとあなたを支え続ける選択になることもあります。
すべてを解き明かす大きな瞬間が常にあるわけではありません。ほとんどの場合、それは小さな一歩の積み重ねです。そしてそれらの小さな一歩が積み重ねが、今日のような、あなたが最も誇りに思うことへとつながるのです。
それは、勇気を出して「こんにちは」と声をかけたことで国会議事堂で出会えた友人かもしれません。あなたのキャリアパスを変えるきっかけとなった偶然選んだ選択科目、あるいは誰も知らず何を期待すべきかわからなかったにもかかわらず、イベントに参加したり社交的なことに参加したりすることを決めた日かもしれません。でも、あなたはそれをやり遂げ、その小さな行動が違いを生みました。
小さな一歩は勢いを生み出します。そして未来を見据える中で、私は皆さんに、思い切り大胆な目標を持つことを自分自身に許可するよう強く願います。それがあなたにとって何を意味するとしてもです。あなたを怖がらせるような目標を設定しても、すべて一度に達成しようとする必要はありません。実際にできる小さなことに焦点を当ててください。それがすぐには気づかなくても、あなたを前進させます。
最も重要なことは、これらの野心を追求する際に、自己を反省し、周りの人々に感謝することです。ポジティブなエネルギーを広めてください。それは必ず戻ってきます。
TUJでの時間の中で、私はプログラムボードのような学生イニシアチブに関わる機会に恵まれました。そのおかげで、ローマのキャンパスを訪れ、何百人もの仲間に会うことができました。イベント後の短い会話でも、さまざまな学部との共同作業でも、すべての小さな行動が私に新しいことを教え、今日の私を作り上げてくれました。
この4年間、TUJは単に課題を提出したり、そういった小さなことを実行したりするだけの場所ではありませんでした。TUJは、私たちに挑戦し、支援し、キャンパスに初めて足を踏み入れた時には予測もしなかった方法で変化を与えるコミュニティを提供してくれました。今あなたの隣に座っている人々とこのコミュニティは、私たちが人生で追い求め、達成するすべてのことの参考となる地点であり続けるでしょう。
この数年間を忘れられないものにしてくれた母、父、弟、TUJの教職員の皆様、そして友人や仲間たちに心から感謝します。
大きな夢を持ちつつも、実行は小さな一歩で。その小さな一歩を大切にし、認めてください。なぜなら、それらは見た目ほど小さなものではないのですから。
