Tokyo²—New Hillside Center

Two Tokyo Locations. One Temple Experience.

The Japan campus of Temple University (TUJ) is growing and so is your future.

In recent years, TUJ has experienced record growth, strengthening its position as one of the leading international universities in Japan. Located just outside of Shibuya, our current campus (City Campus) is home to more than 3,300 degree seeking students from around the world. In January 2025, TUJ expanded to Kyoto, where nearly 350 students are already studying in one of Japan’s most culturally rich environments.

Now, beginning in August 2026, TUJ is taking another major step forward with a second Tokyo-area location: the Hillside Center in Mizonokuchi (Kawasaki) -- just three express stops from Shibuya.

More Space. More Opportunities. More TUJ.

With two Tokyo locations working together, you’ll enjoy the energy of central and suburban Tokyo alongside the comfort, safety, and expanded learning environment of our new 8-story Hillside Center.

The Hillside Center enhances student life, expands academic opportunities, and creates an unforgettable university experience. Just a short distance from the campus in Tokyo (City Campus), the new facility gives students more space, more courses, and more ways to connect.

Designed with students in mind, the Hillside Center features expanded classrooms, open study areas, recreation spaces, and welcoming places to connect, study, and grow. The surrounding neighborhood is well-connected, lively, and safe. It blends city energy with affordability and everyday convenience making it an ideal base for university life. Many TUJ students already live in or around Mizonokuchi, making it a natural extension of the TUJ community.

Global University. A Home Designed for You.

The Hillside Center is more than a classroom building – it’s a campus home within a top global university’s system.

Connected. Convenient. Closer to Home.

The new Hillside Center and City Campus work together as one connected academic environment. TUJ students can focus their studies at one location in Tokyo (or even Kyoto), or study, connect, and engage across both locations with the freedom and flexibility that defines the TUJ.

Students studying at the Hillside Center benefit from:

  • Seamless access to courses at both Tokyo locations.
  • Shared events, clubs, and student organizations.
  • Easy access via three train lines (Tokyu Den-en-toshi, Tokyu Oimachi, JR Nambu) or just 12 minutes between locations via car along Route 246.
  • A shorter commute for first-year students living in TUJ residence halls.

From the Yoga, Musashi Kosugi, and Nogawadai residences, commute times are typically under 10 minutes on the train and under 30-minutes door-to-door making daily student life easier.

First-Year Experience. First-Class Support.

The Hillside Center serves as a dynamic educational hub. TUJ offers General Education courses for all students, a dynamic First Year Experience for new students, and Bridge Program courses for students who are conditionally accepted into TUJ’s undergraduate program.

For all TUJ students, Temple University’s signature General Education offerings at Hillside allow the exploration of a wide range of subjects while building critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills. As Temple’s “passport to explore the world of ideas,” the General Education program introduces all students to our academic commitments to democracy, diversity, community, and sustainability, preparing them for success both at Temple and beyond graduation.

TUJ’s First Year Experience combines academic courses focused on the academic transition to TUJ with wraparound support services designed for new students. TUJ’s First Year Experience empowers new students to forge connections, find belonging, and launch a successful undergraduate career. Spending a semester or two at the Hillside Center will enable new TUJ students to build academic confidence and strong friendships from day one while taking advantage of:

  • Academic offerings for first year students include First Year Experience seminars, Academic Success courses, First Year Writing, and Intellectual Heritage, all taught in a seminar-style format where students discuss and think together with the guidance of our experienced faculty.
  • Dedicated out-of-class workshops and events will help students transition successfully to university life.
  • Additional courses in TUJ majors, world languages, and physical and mental wellness round out a new student’s schedule at Hillside.
  • University studies within a supportive and intentional community at Hillside before progressing to upper-division study at the City Campus.

For Bridge Program students, the Hillside Center will provide an ideal international learning environment to take credit-bearing courses together with instruction designed to advance their academic language skills. All three Bridge Program levels will be offered at Hillside.

How the Dual-Tokyo Model Works.

New TUJ students and students in our Bridge Program* will typically begin at the Hillside Center for their first semesters, where courses offerings and community building activities are concentrated. Students also have the flexibility to:

  • Take courses at both Tokyo locations concurrently.
  • Take advantage of online course offerings.
  • Start their university studies at TUJ Kyoto before shifting to Tokyo.

Upper division courses, major-specific offerings, and advanced electives will be primarily based at the City Campus in Sangenjaya or at TUJ Kyoto.
