Areas of Expertise

Johnathan McCaskill is a legal practitioner who specializes in international humanitarian, human rights and criminal law. He has spent several years working as a legal advisor to international organizations such as the United Nations, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP), and the Prosecutor’s Office of Bosnia-Herzegovina Special Department for War Crimes. He has also served as a legal expert or chief administrator on U.S. State Department- funded rule of law projects in the Philippines, Indonesia, and Liberia.

Teaching Interests

Johnathan has been teaching courses on race & the law, the U.S. legal system, business law and the politics of international law at the undergraduate level, and trial advocacy, property, criminal procedure, criminal law, international trade, and international human rights law at the law school level. He also teaches continuing legal education courses on legal writing, contract drafting, and business & human rights for members of the Tokyo Bar Association. Prior to joining TUJ, he taught at the University of Wisconsin Law School, the University of the Philippines, and Hitotsubashi University.

Research Interests

Johnathan’s research interests include the use of modern teaching pedagogy in legal education at the undergraduate and graduate levels, laws governing Corporate Social Responsibility and resulting compliance regimes, and the implementation of international law standards and best practices in domestic mass atrocity prosecutions.
