11 days paid vacation in the first fiscal year (July-June) increasing to 20 days after 6 years of employment, plus 5 paid “personal and sick days” each year. Overview of position
The Student Conduct Coordinator (SCC) supports TUJ's commitment to fostering a respectful and mutually accountable student community within its highly international and multi-ethnic environment at its campuses in Tokyo and Kyoto. To help ensure a safe learning environment and elevate student success, the SCC addresses student concerns about peer behavior, facilitates conflict resolution, upholds conduct standards, and develops training initiatives to educate students on community expectations.
Embedded in the Office of Student Services and Engagement (OSSE), the SCC balances empathy and policy enforcement, supports informal resolution process and formal conduct proceedings when needed, and contributes to broader OSSE student support efforts during lower-volume periods. The role requires a commitment to student success and education combined with promptness, cultural competency, clear communication across linguistic differences, and collaboration with OSSE and the General Counsel’s office. The SCC will work closely with the Assistant Dean of Students and the General Counsel (who acts as the Student Conduct Administrator) in investigating allegations of misbehavior and will be responsible for maintaining the database for conduct cases.

Primary Responsibilities
1. Student Support & Conflict Resolution
- Guide students in navigating peer behavior concerns, emphasizing cross-cultural communication, mutual respect and boundary-setting in a diverse community.
- Encourage and empower students to take ownership of their behavior, to contribute to a positive, safe and respectful campus environment, and to seek help when needed.
- Act as the primary point of contact for student complaints against other students, and for reports by faculty or staff about student misconduct.
- Promptly conduct initial investigations of allegations of inappropriate behavior that may violate university conduct norms.
- Adapt communication styles to ensure clarity and inclusivity for students from varied backgrounds.
- Facilitate the resolution of conflicts between students, if permissible outside of formal disciplinary hearings.
- Assist in designing and implementing educational sanctions and restorative processes that foster reflection, accountability, and reintegration into the student community.
2. Conduct Code Administration
- Promptly report instances of serious misconduct to the Assistant Dean of Students and the Student Conduct Administrator
- Maintain accurate records in the conduct management system (Advocate) for student conduct cases, including agreed resolutions of academic misconduct.
- Assist in formal proceedings (investigations, hearings, and resolutions) for Conduct Code violations, including convening panels for student conduct hearings.
- Prepare semesterly reports on conduct trends and resolution outcomes to inform policy updates and prevention programming.
- Coordinate with Philadelphia campus conduct staff to align case management reporting (Advocate database practices).
3. Training & Prevention Initiatives
- Develop, facilitate and participate in delivering training programs for students on conflict resolution, self-advocacy, responsible decision-making, community standards, behavioral expectations, and student rights and responsibilities, both under the Conduct Code and under Japanese laws.
- Collaborate with staff and faculty in providing outreach and training on conduct reporting protocols and student behavior management.
- Monitor trends in student conduct issues.
- Assist in policy development, review, and updates related to student conduct procedures, working closely with the Assistant Dean of Students, the Student Conduct Administrator, and the main campus counterparts in Student Affairs.
- Participate in biannual policy and training alignment meetings with Temple University’s main campus conduct professionals to ensure consistency and leverage shared best practices.
- Engage in professional development opportunities in collaboration with Temple’s Philadelphia campus, including training on regulatory issues, bias response, and international student development.
4. OSSE Team Collaboration
- The SCC may participate in an on-call support rotation for student crises, in coordination with OSSE.
- During lower conduct-case volume, assist other OSSE teams (e.g., new students, visa, orientation, activities, clubs) with student support.
Team Responsibilities
- New Student Welcome Week – staff support for numerous events and information sessions during Welcome Week.
- Student Activities – opportunity to chaperone student activities and trips.
- Departmental initiatives – assigned as they arise.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree.
- 1–3 years of professional experience in student conduct, student affairs, legal, or a related area in a higher education or comparable setting.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
- Strong interpersonal skills, facilitation, and cross-cultural conflict resolution skills
- Ability to navigate sensitive conversations across gender, ethnic, cultural and language differences.
- Ability to handle sensitive information confidentially and professionally.
- Collaborative mindset: Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse campus populations and in a team environment; build relationships across departments (e.g., OSSE, General Counsel, Accessibility Services, Counseling, academic units, etc.).
- Comfortable designing and delivering workshops or presentations.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with student conduct software systems (e.g., Advocate).
- Demonstrated commitment to fairness, justice, education, and student success.
Preferred Qualifications & Skills
- Master’s degree or above.
- Cross-cultural competency: Experience working with diverse populations, non-native English speakers, or international communities.
- Conversational fluency in Japanese would be a plus
