Alexander Dmitrenko has extensive experience advising companies across Asia on a wide range of compliance-related matters, focusing on sanctions/export controls, anti-bribery/corruption, anti-money laundering, human rights/forced labour and other laws and regulations. He has assisted clients with establishing compliance policies and procedures, conducting due diligence and compliance clearance on various projects and investments, and conducting internal and regulatory investigations related to potential violations (eg, of the US sanctions or the US FCPA). More recently, Alexander provided compliance and risk mitigation advice related to US-China regulatory tensions and Myanmar-related sanctions, suspension/exit rights and business continuity. Alexander is qualified in the Russian Federation, New York State and as a solicitor of England & Wales, and is also registered as Gaikokuho Jimu Bengoshi with the Daini Tokyo Bar Association. He speaks English, French, Russian, Ukrainian and basic Japanese. Alexander is the Chairperson of Japan Sub-Committee of Temple Law School’s Centre for Compliance and Ethics and teaches International Compliance at Temple Law School Japan.
Akiko Sato is a human rights lawyer who is engaged with business and human rights issues as well as access to justice for socially vulnerable people, both in Japan and Southeast Asia. Akiko is the Japan Representative & Researcher at The Business and Human Rights Resource Centre, a UK-headquartered human rights NGO that aims to promote corporate transparency and accountability as well as empower rights-holders through cross-sector dialogue and advocacy. Akiko also is a Founder and Steering Committee Member of the Business and Human Rights Lawyers Network, as well as a Deputy Secretary-General at Japan’s leading advocacy non-profit, Human Rights Now. She worked on an Asia-Pacific business and human rights project with the United Nations Development Programme based in Bangkok in 2017, and she also worked on legal access and education in Cambodia in the early 2010s.
Romain Caillaud is a risk and reputation management consultant with more than a decade of experience providing public affairs and strategic intelligence services to corporations, law firms and nonprofits in Japan and Southeast Asia. Currently located in Japan, Romain was based prior in Singapore and in Myanmar, and is originally from France. He is the principal of Tokyo-based advisory firm SIPA Partners, an associate fellow in the Myanmar Studies Programme at Singapore’s think tank ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute, and a member of the Japan Committee of the Temple University Law School Compliance Advisory Board. Romain first worked in Myanmar in 2006 at the French Embassy. He returned from 2008 to 2015, when he notably established the Myanmar office of a Southeast Asia-focused public affairs firm, acted as president of the French-Myanmar Chamber of Commerce, and obtained a certificate in Burmese language at Yangon University of Foreign Languages.
