Dear All:

Given that the TMG has moved to the final stage of reopening and is entering the phase where almost all economic and social activities are being permitted, I wanted to give you an update of where we at TUJ stand and what our summer–to-fall plans are.

This announcement will only be the first in a series of announcements as we use this summer in order to prepare for the fall semester, and use the fall semester to prepare for the spring semester. As always, these plans are subject to change given changing conditions.

The first thing I want to stress is that although we are all happy that Tokyo has been able to weather the pandemic storm under more relaxed conditions than other major cities in the world, we at TUJ will be moving more cautiously toward the fall.

As of now the basics are these:

  • This summer we will continue to have all classes taught online but we will begin a cautious opening of the campus to those students and faculty who absolutely need it and those events that we feel are necessary. Most staff will continue to work from home.
  • We will have a restricted on-campus scenario for the fall semester, which in the case of UG means approximately 25% of classes taught in the classroom and 75% taught online.
  • We are planning for a full return to normal operations by the start of the undergraduate spring semester on January 12th.

We are implementing the following Summer re-opening schedule:

June 1 – 21:

In the Building:

  • Masks must be worn at all times.
  • Social distancing.
  • Plastic / Plexiglass sheets for student facing counters (IC, FGA, OSS, Help Desk).
  • Only the main entrance will be open.
  • The 1st floor cafeteria will be open with one chair per table to maintain social distancing. Maximum capacity has been set at 42 students.
  • The 5th floor Open Computer Lab will be open with reduced seating of one chair per table to maintain social distancing.
  • Windows will be opened to improve ventilation.
  • Door will be opened improve circulation/ventilation and to reduce touch points.
  • All other floors closed to students. Faculty and staff may enter other areas of building.
