Why TUJ?: My journey to TUJ began with a simple idea: I wanted to study somewhere that would challenge me to grow in more ways than one. Coming to Japan from Uganda was a big leap—new language, new culture, new expectations. But I didn’t want “comfortable.” I wanted meaningful. At TUJ, I’ve found a space where I can explore technology in depth while also navigating the everyday realities of life in a different country. That mix—of academic focus and real-world adaptation—has shaped me more than I expected. TUJ isn’t just where I study; it’s where I’ve learned what I’m capable of.
Advice for New Students?: Don’t expect to figure everything out at once. Take your time, and allow yourself to grow through the process. Every challenge—whether it’s homesickness, language barriers, or academic pressure—has something to teach you. Trust that you’ll come out stronger, and never hesitate to ask for help. “You are not alone in this”

Why TUJ?: Karate was a major part of my life growing up, and at 13 years old, I had the incredible opportunity to compete in Japan. I fell in love with everything about the country, and from that point forward, I knew that one day I’d return to Japan, not only for competition or vacation, but to live. In high school, when the time came to apply to colleges, the first place I looked was Japan. Immediately upon discovering TUJ, I was sold. I’d be able to continue pursuing my academic goals while making my childhood dream a reality. What more could I have asked for? In my time at TUJ, I’ve gained so much beyond just academics. I’ve built countless new relationships, experienced a lifetime’s worth of adventures, and been driven to go beyond my comfort zone numerous times. College life at TUJ has been an invaluable season of my life and has prepared me for a future I couldn’t be more excited about.
Advice for New Students?: Embrace the uncomfortable! TUJ is packed with amazing people and opportunities, all just a simple “hello” or “yes” away. Don’t be afraid to be awkward or make mistakes. Every experience at TUJ is a chance to grow and create unforgettable memories.

Why TUJ?: Growing up in the United States, I had the incredible opportunity to study Japanese for half of my day in elementary school. When I learned about TUJ and the chance to live in Japan while still receiving a high-quality education from an American university, I was in awe. TUJ has since become my home away from home. The vibrant, welcoming community of students from all over the world is the reason I choose TUJ every single day.
Advice for New Students?: Be a sponge! Moving to a new country and attending TUJ will open up countless amazing opportunities. Embrace every experience, take advantage of the chance to meet new people, and be open to the many possibilities for personal and academic growth!
Sonja
Major: Communication Studies
Hometown: Gothenburg, Sweden
Why TUJ?: At 18, having only ever lived in Sweden, I decided it was time to challenge myself and attend university abroad so I could see more of the world. I wanted an American degree without being confined to an American environment. Through extensive research, I found the perfect solution to my dilemma. TUJ, located in one of the largest and most dynamic cities in the world, could provide me not only with a degree, but also with a unique opportunity to fully immerse myself in multiple cultures at the same time. At TUJ, I have not only experienced Japan, but also made friends from over forty different countries. With the support of our wonderful staff, I have become prepared to confidently face any challenge in my future.
Advice for New Students?: Dare to say “yes!” University truly becomes what you make of it. So, when an opportunity arises to join a niche class, volunteer at a local event, or attend a talk by an ambassador, say yes! You never know what paths might open up from a single interaction. Classes are important, but the connections and network you build are what will truly help you after graduation. As a freshman, make it a habit to say yes!

Hometown: South Korea & Japan
Why TUJ?: Since the beginning of high school, I had been seeking an environment that encouraged proactive, hands-on learning and where diverse perspectives could intersect. Although I had to postpone my plans to study abroad due to the pandemic, I discovered Temple University, Japan Campus (TUJ), an American university in Tokyo. Studying at TUJ has been a truly transformative experience. It has allowed me to nurture my academic curiosity with the support of inspiring professors. The university’s welcoming and diverse environment helped me break out of my shell and build friendships across cultures. Through this journey, I also learned to be independent—making my own decisions, embracing my weakness, and gaining self-confidence.
Advice for New Students?: TUJ is a wonderful place where diverse cultures and perspectives come together from all around the world. Explore, challenge yourself, and enjoy the changes that come with this journey! But also, don’t forget to give yourself time to rest—sit down, reflect, and have a conversation with yourself.
