The Fly to Philly program was launched to provide TUJ students with the opportunity to study at Temple University's Main Campus in the United States and make overseas study even more affordable for all degree-seeking TUJ students while also providing a global experience. Our students can get a true international education by studying in both Tokyo and Philadelphia, and we are confident that the dual campus approach will enhance the university experience and provide our students with a springboard for a rewarding global career.

Program Overview

Academic Program

Qualified students can study at Temple University’s Main Campus in Philadelphia for one to three consecutive semesters, including an optional Summer semester. Students can begin the Fly to Philly program in the Fall or Spring semesters, but not the Summer.

All Fly to Philly participants must enroll in a full-time course load (12 credits) during the Fall and Spring semesters, regardless of visa status. Because Temple’s Main Campus is part of the Temple network, courses typically transfer 1:1. However, students are encouraged to consult with their academic advisor about their course selection before participating in the program.

TUJ students may transfer to Main Campus permanently at the end of the Fly to Philly program if they want to continue studying at the Main Campus. At this point, students will pay Temple Main Campus tuition according to their major and residency status. This　process is overseen by the Study Abroad Coordinator and TUJ’s Academic Advising Center (AAC). For more information, contact the Study Abroad Coordinator at goabroad@tuj.temple.edu.

Program Dates

The academic calendar at the Main Campus differs slightly from that of the Japan Campus.

Fall Semester: Late August to mid-December
Spring Semester: mid-January to early May
Summer I Semester: mid-May to mid-July (depending on the kind of courses taken)
Summer II Semester: early July to early August (depending on the kind of courses taken)

Housing & Meal Plans

Housing

Participants are responsible for securing their own housing while studying at Main Campus. Students are not required to live on-campus and can choose between on-campus and off-campus housing. The process of securing housing begins earlier than you think (usually a full semester in advance), so start early!

Meal Plans

Temple University provides a variety of meal plans to accommodate each student's needs. Although students living off campus are not required to sign up for a meal plan, those living on campus must purchase a weekly meal plan that includes at least 10 meals per week. Please see Dining information about meal plans.

Meal plan rates will be charged per semester and included in your tuition bill.

Program Costs & Scholarships

Program Cost

Participants will pay full-time TUJ per-credit tuition (in USD) directly to the Main Campus in Philadelphia. Please see Tuition and Fees for a breakdown of the per-credit costs. All students will pay the University Services fee, and non-US citizens will pay an additional International Student fee every semester.

Main Campus’s Summer payment structure differs significantly from TUJ’s. The Summer semester at Main Campus is divided into two “sessions” (Summer I and Summer II). You will be charged per credit and billed separately for each Summer session that you attend. Please check TUJ's per-credit tuition costs and keep an eye on Main Campus's balance due notification and billing schedule for Summer I and Summer II.

Scholarships

Japanese citizens (and permanent residents of Japan) who want to study at Main Campus are encouraged to apply for the Toshizo-Watanabe Scholarship , which is offered by the US Japan Council.

There are additional study abroad scholarship opportunities available, and your hometown or country may have its own scholarship program to encourage study abroad. Students should conduct their own research and apply independently.

Please note that the TUJ Continuing Student Scholarship cannot be used for the Fly to Philly program.

Eligibility Requirements

The Fly to Philly Program is open to all TUJ students as long as they meet the following eligibility requirements:

Fully matriculated and have studied for at least one semester at TUJ

Bridge program and non-matriculated students are not eligible to participate in the Fly to Philly program.
You must have completed at least one (1) semester of college-level study by the start of the program. First-semester students are eligible to apply, but approval for participation in the program will be determined at the end of the semester and dependent on meeting all eligibility requirements.

Are in good academic standing, clear of any holds, and meet the minimum GPA requirement for the program

You must have a cumulative and current GPA of 2.0 at the time of application.
You must be in good academic standing at the university, including the semester before participating in the program until the start of your term abroad.
- Academic Warning, Academic Probation, and Visa Probation students are not eligible to apply.
You must be clear of any holds at TUJ (including financial, visa, or any other holds)

Clear of any conduct or disciplinary issues at TUJ

Must maintain full-time status while on the Fly to Philly Program

You must maintain a full-time course load (12-18 credits) each semester while studying at Main Campus, with the exception of the Summer semester.

In addition, it is strongly recommended that students have:

Successfully completed at least one semester of full-time coursework (12+ credits) at TUJ
- You must maintain a full-time course load for the entirety of your participation on the Fly to Philly program to remain eligible, so we recommend completing a full course load at TUJ in advance.
Completed the ENG 802/812 (Analytical Reading and Writing) course requirement
- Courses at Main Campus can differ from what you’re used to and some are especially reading/writing intensive, so we highly recommend completing this course if you plan to participate in the Fly to Philly program.

Admissions Timeline

Admissions for the Fall priority and Spring semesters are not rolling; all applications received by the deadline are reviewed once the deadline has passed.
- Once you submit your application, you should expect a decision by the decision deadline, about one month after the program application deadline has passed.
Applications received after the Fall priority deadline are reviewed monthly, at the end of each month, until the final Fall deadline.
- Students applying for the Fall semester are encouraged to apply before the priority deadline to ensure they can register for courses and complete all departure preparations in a timely manner. Applying after the priority deadline may result in course registration and student visa delays.

Summer Semester

Here are some things to consider if you are interested in spending the Summer semester at Main Campus:

Students cannot start the Fly to Philly program in Summer.

The Summer semester is optional.

Students participating in the Fly to Philly program can study at Main Campus for up to three semesters at TUJ tuition rates within one calendar year. Within this timeframe, students can now opt to take part-time or full-time classes during the Summer semester or to "skip" the Summer semester. Please be aware that “skipping” the Summer semester will not extend Fly to Philly eligibility by another semester.

As an example, the following options are POSSIBLE:

Fall → Spring → [skip Summer] → graduate, transfer, or return to TUJ
Spring → [skip Summer] → Fall → graduate, transfer, or return to TUJ

The following options are NOT POSSIBLE:

Fall → Spring → [skip Summer] → Fall = not within one calendar year

Students are not required to register for a full-time courseload in Summer.

Though students must register for a full time (12-credit) course load for the Fall and Spring semester, you are no longer required to register for a full-time course load during the Summer semester. You may register for at least three credits during the Summer I and Summer II semesters. However, there is one thing that you must be aware of:

1. Summer is treated as two separate semesters on Main Campus (Summer I and Summer II). This means that you can take courses in a variety of ways during the Summer semester, such as (if continuing Fly to Philly through the Fall semester):

a. take Summer I courses → skip Summer II → Fall
b. skip Summer I → take Summer II courses → Fall
c. skip Summer I and II → Fall

Undergraduate
