To enter Japan,  foreign nationality students whose residence is outside of Japan must apply for a “Certificate of Eligibility” (COE) issued by the Japanese Immigration Bureau.

Visa Application Process

  1.  Submit the required documents by the visa application deadline
  2.  TUJ submits the visa application on your behalf to the Immigration Bureau
  3.  Submit the Housing Form
      Housing Form will be available after the visa application deadline, once TUJ submits the visa application to Japanese Immigration
  4.  The COE is issued ( it takes 5-8 weeks)
  5.  TUJ receives the COE, and issues you the Advance Payment Invoice
  6.  Settle the invoice
  7.  TUJ confirms your payment and sends the COE via express mail to you overseas
  8.  Go to a Japanese Embassy/Consulate  with your COE, a seal of landing verification will be stamped in your passport
  9.  A residence card will be issued on arrival at the airport

Notes :

  • Your visa application will be submitted after the visa application deadline
  • Do not purchase your airline ticket until you receive the landing verification (step 8)
  • You may enter Japan 14 days before the first day of new student orientation

*Should the deadline fall on a weekend or Japanese holiday, the deadline will be the next business day

Required Documents

Prepare the following items and upload them to the visa application portal by the deadline. 

  • All documents must be in either English or Japanese
  • Documents submitted to TUJ will not be returned
  • The portal is available from three months before the visa application deadline of your starting semester
