External programs are study abroad programs administered or sponsored by other universities, or by study abroad organizations. External programs offer virtually unlimited possibilities for students in every major and in nearly any country around the world. These programs also give students a wide array of summer, semester and academic year study abroad options which expand beyond many existing programs offered through Temple. Through the course evaluation process, external program participants earn transfer credit for approved courses and can apply those credits towards the fulfillment of their degree requirements, including major, minor, elective and most general education requirements. For more information, visit the External Programs page .

External program cost vary greatly depending on which program provider you choose. Applicants are responsible for navigating through the program website to find information on cost, courses, housing, and application process. Most of these programs require applicants to obtain an approval/endorsement/recommendation from their home university (i.e. TUJ). TUJ applicants may obtain necessary approvals from the TUJ study abroad coordinator. Applicants must meet with an academic advisor in AAC, who serves as a study abroad liaison, to review proposed study abroad courses and obtain necessary pre-approvals. If students plan to fulfill major/minor requirements, an approval by the respective major coordinator is necessary.

General application eligibility includes:

  • Currently enrolled as full-time, matriculated students at TUJ.
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher (on a 4.0 scale) from all colleges attended.
  • Be in good academic standing (warning and probation students are not eligible) as well as good disciplinary standing (any outstanding student conduct issues must be reviewed and resolved before application).
  • There may be language and additional requirements depending on the programs. Please check the eligibility page as well as the program provider’s application/eligibility web page.

Most external study abroad program providers offer their own study abroad scholarships. Students are encouraged to research and apply through their website in addition to the Temple Education Abroad Scholarship database.
