The Japan campus of Temple University (TUJ) celebrates the life and legacy of JoAnne A. Epps.

Epps was a larger-than-life leader who worked tirelessly for Temple University for four decades. Starting as a cashier in the university bookstore, Epps’ distinguished career included service as a law professor, senior administrator, dean, provost, and president. After serving as the acting president for six months, Epps tragically and unexpectedly passed away on September 19, 2023, after becoming ill while attending a university event. She was 72.

President Epps served the university community in all capacities with grace, dignity, and unwavering commitment. She was a kind, thoughtful, and brilliant leader who sought to elevate students and empower everyone. Recognizing the importance of a university degree, she helped pave the way for many students to pursue higher education. Embodying the resilient spirit of Temple University, President Epps touched and positively impacted thousands of students, staff, faculty, alumni, and community members.

President Epps was an ardent supporter of TUJ and Japan. While serving as provost, she traveled to Japan numerous times to help guide and support the campus. President Epps also played an important role in the creation of TUJ’s new campus in Sangenjaya and unique double degree program with Showa Women’s University in 2019. Together with current TUJ Dean Matt Wilson, President Epps assisted the Japan Federation of Bar Associations in providing trial advocacy training to Japanese attorneys in advance of the rollout of quasi-jury trials (saiban-in seido) in 2009.

The magnitude of the loss of President Epps to her family, friends, and the Temple community cannot be adequately described. In this time of sorrow, may we remember the wonderful contributions of President Epps and find strength in the legacy that she leaves behind. Her dedication, impact, and kindness will be remembered forever.

As we reflect on this moment of loss, we join together to move the mission of Temple University forward. The spirit of President Epps continues to inspire as the university continues to build upon her legacy.
