1. Overview

The Credit Exchange Program between Musashi University (Musashi U., Tokyo) and TUJ has launched as of Fall 2012. This program will provide TUJ students with enhanced educational opportunities. Students are able to take courses at Musashi University that TUJ does not offer without paying extra tuition.

For international students at TUJ particularly who major in, but not limited to, Japanese Language, Asian Studies, and International Affairs, this program will provide excellent opportunities to challenge themselves by taking classes offered in Japanese at Musashi U. They can also get to know more Japanese students through cultural exchanges.

2. Eligibility (TUJ ⇒ Musashi)

While the final acceptance decision will be made by Musashi U., TUJ students who wish to participate in this program first must meet Temple University's standard criteria of "Permission to Take Courses at Another Institution." The Academic Advising Center (AAC) is responsible to review and approve the permission request.

Some courses, but not all, offered at Musashi U. require highly developed proficiency in Japanese language. Courses that require Japanese language proficiency are to be determined by Musashi U. every semester. When interested in these courses, TUJ students whose native language is other than Japanese thus must demonstrate their proficiency by one of the following means:

  • Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT), Level 1 (N1);
  • Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU), 240 or higher in Japanese and 4 or higher in essay, or;
  • J.TEST A-D Level, 700 or higher

In order to be eligible for the program, TUJ student must meet one of the following criteria:

  • 2.1. A student currently must enroll as a degree-seeking student at TUJ, and must have completed at least one semester at TUJ;
  • 2.2. A student must be enrolled as an approved Study Abroad (exchange) student from a third institution based on an agreement or arrangement between Temple University and their home institution.

Students in category 2.2 may participate in the program under the conditions specified in 3.1.

3. Possible Tracks

TUJ students may enroll in Musashi U. courses under the conditions described below by following TUJ's instruction.

  • 3.1. Concurrently enroll in courses both at TUJ and Musashi U.
  • 3.2. Enroll only at Musashi U. for a period of between one semester and one academic year (no registration at TUJ)

4. Duration

  • In 3.1., students may enroll at Musashi U. on a semester basis. These students may continue at Musashi U. without restriction of enrollment period.
  • In 3.2., the maximum allowed continuous enrollment period is one academic year, as defined by TUJ.

In either case, students must meet Temple University's Academic Residency Requirement in order to earn a degree from Temple University.

5. Application Documents and Due Dates

The following documents are to be submitted together to the Academic Advising Center. The submission due dates will be determined and announced by the AAC.

  1. Petition to Complete a Course(s) at Another Institution after Matriculation (PDF: 218KB) 
  2. Musashi Application Form
  3. Musashi Registration Form
  4. Japanese Language Proficiency Verification, if necessary
  5. Two copies of a Face-to-Shoulder (without background) colored photo (in size 3x4cm)

6. Transfer of Credits

All Musashi U. courses that TUJ students propose to take will be evaluated by the AAC in advance to determine how those courses will contribute toward their Temple University's degree requirements. The final transfer of Musashi U. credits will be approved in compliance with Transfer Credits and Permission to Take Courses at Another Institution policies.

7. Course Attendance, Examinations, and Grading

TUJ students must attend courses in accordance with the attendance policies and academic calendar provided by Musashi U. All students are expected to begin attending Musashi U. courses as of the first meeting of the courses for which they are registered, unless specified by Musashi U.

TUJ students must follow the examination policies and schedule of Musashi U.

Musashi U. will grade TUJ students in accordance with their grading policies. After the term of attendance finishes, Musashi U. will report credits accrued and grades earned in each course directly to the AAC.

8. Tuition and Fees

TUJ students will pay tuition and fees to TUJ, not to Musashi U. The tuition amount will be decided based on the total number of credits they are registered for during the term of attendance.

Example:

6 credits registered at TUJ + 6 credits registered at Musashi U. = 12 credits tuition paid to TUJ.

Students are responsible for other costs, such as transportation and textbooks.

9. Students' Responsibilities

When TUJ students are discovered in a commitment of academic dishonesty and/or other academic and non-academic disciplinary actions, both Musashi U. and TUJ will always hold a right to choose how to treat them, as appropriate. Expected consequences include, but not limited to, withdrawal of enrollment permission or failure grade assignment. There may be TUJ's Code of Conduct action or academic reprimand taken further against the discovered circumstance.

10. TUJ Students Inquiries and Privacy

During their enrollment at Musashi U., TUJ will remain responsible to handle inquiries from its students and related third parties. Musashi U. will handle neither inquiries nor personal information release request from TUJ students and their stakeholders. Inquires should contact TUJ's Academic Advising Center.
