Fifteen (15) days paid vacation in the first fiscal year (July-June) increasing to 24 days after 6 years of employment, plus 5 paid “personal and sick days” each year. In addition, approximately two weeks company-wide break over Christmas/New Year. Japanese social insurance and pension, commuting/telework allowance, a welfare-discount program membership, retirement payment system and tuition benefits for Temple University, Japan Campus (TUJ) programs.

Overview of Position

As the Japan campus of Temple University (TUJ) looks to expand its impact in international education and continues to experience unprecedented growth (including a 75% increase in its undergraduate student population over the past 3 years), we seek a dynamic, service-oriented, and collaborative leader for the inaugural role of Executive Director of Strategic Relationships in Kyoto. In filling this new role, the successful candidate will focus on cultivating and strengthening partnerships while advancing reputation, building recognition, and enhancing awareness of TUJ.
Through learning, discovery, and collaboration, TUJ seeks to transform lives and livelihoods. Reporting directly to the Chief of Staff, the Executive Director role involves helping the University achieve its goals while serving students and working to implement our strategic plan. TUJ also aims to strengthen and create partnerships at every level that amplify our academic, economic, social, and cultural impact.
The Executive Director will also be expected help TUJ to:

  • Build bridges and provide programming involving prefectural and city governments,
  • Enhance partnerships with Japanese universities in terms of programs, initiatives, exchanges, and space; and
  • Secure and expand collaborative programming with industry.

The Executive Director will play a critical role in assisting TUJ to maximize impact in these areas.
The Executive Director needs to be flexible, enjoy working in a fast-paced environment, and be willing to travel occasionally. The successful candidate will be highly organized, strategic, and action oriented. The candidate will desire to help Temple University elevate international education inside of Japan. The Executive Director will collaborate closely with various departments within TUJ to organize and offer collaborative programs and special initiatives. This position is eligible for a flexible schedule and hybrid remote working approach.

Primary Responsibilities

The Executive Director of Strategic Relationships will be instrumental in driving TUJ’s growth, advancing its reputation, and expanding its influence through strategic partnerships and collaborative endeavors in the realm of international education in Japan. The role of the Executive Director will evolve based on the needs of the students and the University. Initially, the role may include:

  • Strategic Planning and Execution: Work closely with the Dean and relevant departments to align partnership strategies with TUJ’s overall strategic plan. Contribute to the formulation and execution of plans that optimize the university’s impact and reach in the international education landscape in terms of government entities, academic institutions, and industry partners.
  • Program development and implementation: Help oversee the development and execution of programs, initiatives, and exchanges in collaboration with governments, academic institutions, and industry. Facilitate the creation and expansion of collaborative educational and professional programs that align with TUJ's strategic goals.
  • Relationship management: Oversee strategic partnership relationships from proposal acceptance through successful implementation, ensuring timely contract execution, efficient partnership launches, effective relationship management, invoicing, payment processes, and partnership renewals. Create comprehensive action plans and timelines for partnership launches, leading both internal and external project meetings with key stakeholders to initiate new partnership activities and ensure their seamless execution.
  • Data management: Collect data to showcase the reciprocal value generated through external articles, social media, websites, and various reports. Compile this information into insightful reports and presentations for university stakeholders and partners to effectively communicate the shared benefits and accomplishments.
  • Pipeline development: Support the growth of a strategic partnership pipeline by designing, implementing, and leading data-driven outreach strategies to high-potential partners.
  • Strengthen partnerships: Help manage and nurture relationships with key stakeholders including partner universities, industry partners, and other external collaborators. Develop deep relationships and engage strategic partners at senior levels to identify new challenges and potential targeted solutions that leverage TUJ’s expertise and resources.
  • Government collaboration: Work closely with the Dean on projects, initiatives, and the implementation of the strategic plan involving partnerships with governmental entities. Recently, TUJ entered into collaborative agreements with Yamanashi Prefecture and the City of Setagaya that call for joint initiatives involving international education, research collaborations, and workforce development. The Executive Director will help oversee these relationships and assist in developing similar collaborations with other prefectural and city governments.
  • Cultivate university partnerships: Spearhead the identification, cultivation, and strengthening of strategic partnerships, alliances, and collaborations with universities and private institutions to bolster TUJ’s academic, economic, social, and cultural impact.
  • Reputation advancement and brand recognition: Help devise and execute initiatives to enhance TUJ's reputation and brand recognition in the international education sphere within Japan. Work closely with the leadership team to develop information-sharing systems and processes that support awareness and successful execution of partnership activities and relationships.
  • Cross-functional collaboration: Collaborate extensively with various internal departments at TUJ to coordinate and execute collaborative programs, special initiatives, and projects. Foster a collaborative work culture that promotes interdisciplinary efforts and achieves shared objectives.
  • Fast-paced environment adaptation: Thrive and excel in a fast-paced environment, demonstrating agility and resilience while managing multiple priorities effectively. Display adeptness in problem-solving and decision-making under dynamic circumstances.
  • Process improvement: Identify opportunities for process improvement and efficiency gains and implement best practices and lessons learned from past experiences.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Advanced degree from an accredited institution of higher education in international affairs, political science, law, business, communications, higher education administration, or related field.
  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible related work experience.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Service-first mentality and passion for facilitating student success.
  • Fluency in English and Japanese (Reading, Writing and Speaking)
  • Outstanding relationship skills and the ability to build rapport with internal and external constituents.
  • Emotional intelligence and ability to establish credibility, work collaboratively, and influence outcomes with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Highly motivated self-starter who works well independently.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities to engage with various stakeholders effectively

Preferred Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Leadership and/or executive experience in higher education and/or public sector work environment.
  • Expertise in academic program management and administration.
  • Teaching and/or study experience at universities in the United States.
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with multiple constituents.
  • Demonstrated technical skills using and presenting Microsoft Office Suite, collaboration, presentation systems, etc.
