George W. Miller III
Areas of Expertise
Associate Dean Miller is a longtime journalist, having worked at the Philadelphia Daily News, Philadelphia Weekly and a variety of other publications. He has served as a photojournalist, features writer, crime reporter and columnist. In 2010, he launched JUMP, a quarterly print music magazine (with digital components) that documents the Philadelphia music scene.
Miller has taught throughout the journalism program, from the large lecture hall class, Journalism & Society, through the capstone class, Philadelphia Neighborhoods, as well as graduate-level classes.
Miller studies journalism start-up organizations, learning about how they develop their content and business strategies. In 2008, he created a class called "The Entrepreneurial Journalist," which encourages students to recognize opportunities and build media outlets to inform under-served communities. Over the years, many students turned their class projects into actual businesses.
Before arriving at Temple, Miller taught at Loyola University Maryland and Wilmington University. He taught in summer multimedia programs in London, Cagli (Italy) and Armagh (Northern Ireland).
