529 College Savings Plan

529 College Savings Plans

529 College Savings Plans can be used by TUJ students to help pay for their tuition costs. These funds must be sent to Temple University’s main campus in Philadelphia for processing before being transferred to TUJ.

The specific requirements for establishing and withdrawing from a 529 College Savings Plan vary by state, so please check with your state for information on how to make use of your plan at TUJ.

Temple University does not request funds from College Savings Plans. To ensure funds arrive in a timely manner, follow all instructions provided by your College Savings Plan.

You should first check with your 529 provider to determine if you can submit your 529 payment electronically. If not, they will need to mail a check to Temple University at the address listed below.

Payee: Temple University

Temple University Bursar’s Office
1803 N. Broad Street
115 Carnell Hall
Philadelphia, PA 19122

Please issue the check to Temple University and request that your full name and 9-digit TU ID number be included in the memo line on the check. Do not use another name such as “TUJ” or “Temple Japan”; use only “Temple University”. Please note that check payments may take up to ten (10) business days after your savings plan servicer approves your request before the funds are issued to and received by Temple University.

Contact your 529 provider to request funds as soon as you receive your bill for the semester from TUJ to ensure timely processing.

Current students can contact the TUJ Bursar () for further information regarding the use of 529 plans at TUJ.

Using your 529 Plan for the Advance Payment

529 Plans can be used to help cover the Advance Payment invoice required for visa sponsored students. To use the 529 plan:

  1. First, request that the funds be sent to Temple University in Philadelphia per the instructions above as soon as you receive the Advance Payment invoice.

  1. Second, notify the TUJ Financial Aid Coordinator at that you intend to use 529 to pay for the Advance Payment and that you have already requested your 529 provider to send the funds to main campus.

After main campus confirms receipt of the funds, TUJ will add that amount to the Advance Payment using the exchange rate stated on the Advance Payment invoice.

At this point, the 529 payment amount in yen is only an estimate. There is a delay between the funds’ arrival at main campus and its transfer to TUJ.

The value of your payment is subject to the USD-YEN exchange rate on the date of transfer from main campus to TUJ. You will be required to pay any difference resulting from a change in the exchange rate after the funds are transferred to TUJ.
