All prospective students are required to pay their non-refundable¥20,000 Enrollment Deposit to confirm their intention to enroll at TUJ. This deposit will be credited towards your tuition. The Payment link for the Enrollment Deposit is available the TUJ Application Hub New Tab . The Enrollment Deposit is required to receive your TUID number and login information to TUportal New Tab.
Please note that this Enrollment Deposit is not covered by FAFSA or the GI Bill.

Submit your request via the Admission Status Change Form New Tab (link to TUJ Application Hub New Tab). As per TUJ Admissions Policy, accepted students will be allowed to defer enrollment up to three semesters past your original semester of admission without being required to complete a new application for admission.
Please be advised for students who were originally waitlisted, your admission to TUJ is valid for the semester admitted. Special exceptions under extenuating circumstances may be granted on a case-by-case basis.
Your TUJ Application Hub New Tab is where you submitted your Admissions Application to TUJ. It is where also the visa COE application process (if necessary), Online New Student Orientation and Class Registration will occur.
Your TUportal New Tab gives registered students a single sign-on gateway to Temple's online services including Canvas, Self-Service Banner, TUmail New Tab, and Main Campus library databases.
The matriculation fee applies to accepted students, who are enrolled in a degree program, who intend to graduate from TUJ with a degree. For TUJ-sponsored new visa student, this fee is included in the Advance Payment. For others, this fee is included in the first statement as per the Tuition and Billing Schedule.
You can change your major (including double majoring and/or adding minor) during your Online New Student Orientation via the Major Confirmation Form. The schedule for Online New Student Orientation is available on Arrival and Orientation.
The profile may have inaccurate information for various reasons. You can discuss your status with your Academic Advisor to have it fixed. The Academic Advising Center will assign Academic Advisor, during Online New Student Orientation. For the schedule of Online New Student Orientation, please refer to Arrival and Orientation.
Transfer students should submit their final transcripts as soon as possible. TUJ Admissions may take up to several weeks to evaluate any transfer credits. You should discuss your transfer credits with your Academic Advisor during online New Student Orientation.
New Student Orientation is to introduce TUJ’s facilities and campus to students. This occurs online, via your TUJ Application Hub New Tab. You will learn about university services, academic policies and be assigned an Academic Advisor to register for your first semester classes.
The schedule for Online New Student Orientation is available on Arrival and Orientation. Students who have paid the enrollment deposit (payment link in TUJ Application Hub New Tab) will have access to New Student Orientation (in the TUJ Application Hub New Tab) when it is available.
You can register for classes after you are assigned an Academic Advisor.

Many students entering TUJ, even those with previous credits in Math and English, will be required to take the Math and English Assessments. Your NextSteps portal in TUportal New Tab, will inform you if you are exempted from taking the placement assessments.
Placement Assessments are taken through your NextSteps portal in TUportal New Tab once they become available. In addition, all students must complete the New Student Questionnaire (NSQ) even if you do not need to take any other Placement Assessments.
Transfer credits take a few weeks to be evaluated. You may consult transfer credit evaluation results through the Next Steps channel in TUportal New Tab. Before the start of the semester, you should also check the Self-Service Banner on TUportal New Tab to view any additional transfer credits that may have been evaluated. Students may consult with their Academic Advisor, once assigned, during New Student Orientation.
Students who updated transcripts late may not have their evaluations in time for Class Registration. TUJ will not actively reach out to let students know their transcripts have been received, but you may confirm with your TUJ Admissions counselor.
Invoices and deadlines are as per TUJ Tuition Billing and Payment Schedules. All the necessary information to complete the payment will be in the invoices. All invoices are delivered to your TUmail.
Students who applied for a new student visa will receive an estimate of their first semester fees in the Advance Payment as part of their visa application process. For an idea of timing, refer to the visa deadlines.
It is difficult to predict exactly how much tuition will be until the invoices are released. For now, please refer to Tuition and Fees and Estimated Total Cost.
For your first semester at TUJ, Easy Payment Plan (EPP) is available to split the first semester tuition into 2 parts. Invoices and deadlines are as per TUJ Tuition Billing and Payment Schedules.

Japan Admit (JA) students should refer to the Arrival and Orientation webpage for arrival dates. Short-term Study Abroad (SA) students attending TUJ for 1 or 2 terms should reference the arrival from their program website.
As per the TUJ Housing Requirements, all new students who applied for a New Student Visa are required to spend the first semester at TUJ Housing unless they completed the Homestay application or are approved for the Housing Waiver. (The housing requirement does not apply for visa switchers.)
If you applied for a New Student Visa, you will be automatically placed into TUJ Housing unless you complete the Homestay application or are approved for the Housing Waiver Petition. The Housing Plan to ask your room preference will be in the TUJ Application Hub New Tab once the visa COE application ends for each semester.
The link to apply for Housing Waiver Petition will be included in Housing Plan and become available to you after the visa COE application deadline in the TUJ Application Hub New Tab. Refer to Housing requirements for the criteria and deadlines.
Please contact the TUJ Kyoto Office of Student Services (OSSE) at kyoto-osse@tuj.temple.edu to indicate that you are interested in our housing and you will be sent the housing form.
TUJ Kyoto allows multi-semester stays, meaning you can continue living in TUJ Kyoto housing as long as you remain registered for courses and keep attending classes on our campus. You can extend your stay in your housing by filling out the Academic and Housing Plan, which is sent to students in the middle of each semester by the TUJ Kyoto Office of Student Services (OSSE).
You will apply for a student ID card as part of your Online New Student Orientation. When submitted in a timely manner, TUJ housing students will receive it during their housing check in and other students can pick it up from the Information Centre (1F).
You can get a discounted commuter pass after receiving their student ID card and paying your first semester’s tuition and fees. For more information, refer Student Commuter Sticker and Pass (link to TUportal) or enquire at the Information Center (1F) during Welcome Week.
There are a limited number of on-campus jobs.
Students should inquire with departments directly regarding jobs when they arrive on campus. If job openings are available, it will be advertised to the entire campus.
Students who are on a TUJ sponsored student visa should review Visa Regulations before applying for part-time jobs.
You can check out the list of TUJ clubs on our TUJ Kyoto Clubs Page (TU login required). We have over 20 active clubs and students are able to join or start clubs when they arrive.

Yes, and more! TUJ sponsors a variety of events and activities throughout the semester, including culture and language exchange programs, day outings, and overnight trips. Students can learn more about these engagement trips during Welcome Week.
This scholarship is a one-time scholarship that covers the matriculation fee (434,100 JPY) for new students enrolling at TUJ Kyoto for the Summer 2026, Fall 2026, Spring 2027, and Summer 2027 semesters.
There is no separate application required – eligible students will automatically receive the scholarship upon payment of the 20,000 JPY enrollment deposit. Students can pay their enrollment deposit in their TUJ Application Hub.
There is no deadline for the Kyoto Inaugural Scholarship. To receive the scholarship, you must pay the enrollment deposit and the scholarship will be applied to your account.
