Contemporary art, exhibition practice, sculpture methods and cross-disciplinary practices
Assistant Professor Kubota teaches a range of studio art and other non-studio art courses, including; Post-studio practice and upper-level drawing courses, a senior capstone Art Seminar, and foundation and introductory-level courses such as 2D Design, Computer Imaging, and Drawing I and II.
Assistant Professor Kubota works across various media, from painting to video, installation, and writing. His works often incorporate notions of history (that he knows and doesn't know) and memory (that he has and doesn't have yet). Assistant Professor Kubota is currently working on multiple assignments under the working title, hohoemigaeshi, the title borrowed from a last-released song by the Japanese idol trio, Candies. Each investigation incorporates the history of different places and periods using diverse figures from the last century, which he has been trying to say goodbye to. The resulting 'work' appears as an installation in an exhibition venue, while it also realizes as a (performative) lecture and publication. The artist's book consists of his writings, and the encyclopedic collection of cited texts will be published in 2024-25. Along with those activities and practices, Assistant Professor Kubota is interested in critical discourses surrounding the professionalization of an exhibiting practice. He investigates it through the practices of running an art space in Tokyo, where he organizes exhibitions and publishes artists' books.
