Overview of TUJ and TUJ KYOTO:
Based in Philadelphia, Temple University is a public Carnegie-designated R1 research university that ranks in the top 350 of all universities worldwide according to Times Higher Education. (2023). It is ranked among the top 50 public universities in the United States according to U.S. News & World Report (2024). With approximately 30,000 students, Temple maintains a multi-campus system extending from Pennsylvania to Rome to Japan.
Established in 1982, the Japan campus of Temple University (TUJ) is a full-service branch campus that educates students from nearly 70 countries in English in its undergraduate programs, graduate programs (law, business, graduate education), and non-degree programs (continuing education and corporate education). TUJ is the oldest and largest branch campus of a foreign university in Japan. More details about TUJ are available at www.tuj.ac.jp. Its strategic priorities and key objectives are accessible, Strategic Priorities & Key Objectives. TUJ has increased enrollments significantly in recent years, is financially healthy, and has hired over 20 new full-time faculty members this academic year, with plans for over 10 more for next academic year.
TUJ offers undergraduate programs to a broad mix of over 2,200 Japanese and non-Japanese degree-seeking students who will earn their degrees from Temple University through the Japan campus. Every semester, additional students from Temple’s main campus and other universities converge on our campus for a short-term study abroad experience.
Based in one of the most dynamic cities in the world, we offer thirteen full undergraduate majors ranging from Art to International Business to Psychological Studies. Our faculty and staff is international, with 69 full time faculty joined by experienced administrators and many part-time adjunct faculty from the professions, business and the arts. TUJ holds classes on the U.S. academic calendar with 15-week fall and spring semesters, a well-enrolled 10-week summer semester, and a 3-week May session.
Starting in January 2025, Temple University will broaden its presence in Japan through the establishment of a new satellite location in Kyoto. Over the past three years, TUJ has experienced unprecedented growth, including an 80% increase in its undergraduate student population. To take our next leap forward by securing more space for our growing student body, expanding our impact beyond Tokyo, and advancing our new initiatives, TUJ has partnered with Kyoto-based Seibo Jogakuin (Seibo). Founded over 100 years ago, Seibo operates campuses in Kyoto and Osaka that serve nursery school through high school students. Together, TUJ and Seibo will play a critical role in Kyoto by advancing international education, building bridges across cultures, and equipping Temple University students with the tools required to succeed in our interconnected world.
