Professor Mason has been practicing in the field of Intellectual Property Law since 1994, when during law school, he interned at a Law Office of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and then became a Patent Examiner at the USPTO the following year. Currently, Professor Mason practices in all areas of intellectual property law and has extensive patent prosecution experience, including managing worldwide patent portfolios; preparing and prosecuting utility, provisional, and design patent applications before the USPTO; prosecuting international PCT applications; and procuring foreign patent rights throughout the world. His practice also includes providing freedom-to-operate, invalidity, infringement, validity, and non-infringement opinions. He works in several technologies, including: semiconductor manufacturing and processing, software, consumer electronics, metallurgical and polymer materials, as well as drug delivery systems and medical devices. He also handles post-grant proceedings (such as reexamination and inter partes review) before the USPTO. His litigation experience includes conducting discovery and drafting litigation documents. In addition, he has lectured on IP best practices for U.S. patent laws to Japanese companies and organizations here in Japan.
