A Certificate to Empower Teaching Skills for Higher Education 
Through Two Fully Online Courses

Starting in Summer I 2026, the Teaching in Higher Education Certificate Program provided by Temple University Main Campus will be available through TUJ Graduate College of Education.
The Certificate is designed for current faculty members looking to enhance their teaching or advance their careers, or high school teachers or professionals in other fields who would like to teach in higher education.

Earn the six-credit certificate through a part-time cohort program, by completing online coursework and projects in groups with classmates.

Course Offerings

Cohort Schedule and Course Format

The Teaching in Higher Education Certificate is completed on a part-time basis as part of a cohort. (Complete online coursework and projects in groups with classmates.)

  • The Summer cohort enrolls in one course in each of the summer sessions (Summer I and Summer II).
    Each course in Summer I and Summer II is a six-week course in which each week includes two formats: a synchronous meeting conducted through Zoom on a specified date and time, and asynchronous activities conducted through Canvas Discussions and VoiceThread. (See below.) 
  • The Fall/Spring cohort takes one course in Fall and the other in Spring.
    Each course in Fall and Spring is a fourteen-week course and the class format varies by semester (synchronous or asynchronous). (See below.)

You are encouraged to complete the second course with your cohort; however, Course 2 can be completed any time within 3 years of completing the Course 1 prerequisite.

Course Description

Course 1: Teaching in Higher Education Seminar (EPSY 8985, 3 Credits)

This course will be offered in Summer I and Fall.

Description
This course will enhance your knowledge of how people learn, expand and diversify your toolbox of teaching methods, and give you opportunities to apply what you are learning to the development of course materials and lesson plans. Participants will explore research on how students learn, develop strategies for fostering engagement and meaningful learning, and apply integrated course design principles to create syllabi, assignments, and assessments. Through readings and activities, individualized feedback on your assignments, your own self-reflection and dialogue with a learning community of colleagues. you will build a purposeful, inclusive, and adaptable teaching approach. 

Course Goals
Upon successful completion of this course, the goal is that students will be able to:  

  • Apply research on learning and adult development to teaching; 
  • Apply the principles of integrated course design to develop syllabi, assessments and learning activities; 
  • Use a variety of research-based teaching methods to promote learning, development, achievement of all students; 
  • Develop a reflective and purposeful and learning-centered approach to teaching; 
  • Appreciate learning-centered teaching.
Course 2: Innovation, Technology, and Teaching in Higher Education (EPSY 8960, 3 Credits)

This course will be offered in Summer II and Spring.

Description
This seminar provides instructors with the knowledge and experience to use research-based best practices when incorporating technology to support student learning. Together we will examine, interact with, and evaluate the application of a wide-range of technology-based innovations to achieve and assess learning goals and actively engage students. 

Course Goals
Upon successful completion of this course, the goal is that students will be able to:

  • Articulate a personal philosophy and vision for using technology to support student learning 
  • Explain and evaluate uses of technology to support teaching and learning 
  • Develop technology-based teaching materials, which demonstrate:
    • an alignment with learning goals
    • competency
    • best practices
    • active student engagement
  • Apply principles of Universal Design for Learning to teaching with technology

Prerequisite: Course 1 (EPSY 8985). 

Tuition and Fees

  • New Student Fee*: ¥12,200
  • Tuition: ¥267,000 per three-credit course

Application Process

Please submit your application by the following deadlines. 

  • Summer Cohort: Thursday, May 7, 2026
  • Fall/Spring Cohort: Thursday, August 20, 2026
1. Review the requirements
  1. Qualification: A master’s degree with a minimum graduate GPA of 3.0 
  2. Transcripts:
    Your master’s transcripts from colleges and universities attended prior to Temple University registration (They do not need to be official or sealed.)
  3. Minimum English Language Requirements:
    All applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate English proficiency unless they qualify for a waiver. (Refer to the information below.)
    Minimum score from a test taken no earlier than two years before the date of application to this program:
    TOEFL iBT® test: 80 (taken before January 21, 2026) or
    TOEFL iBT® test:   4 (taken on or after January 21, 2026) , or
    TOEFL ITP® test: 550, or
    IELTS: 6.5.

    [English Language Proficiency Test Score Waivers]
    Applicants who have earned a bachelor’s or master’s degree in an English-speaking country or from an institution in which English is the medium of instruction may be eligible for a waiver of the English language test score requirement.

3. Pay the non-refundable New Student Fee of 12,200 yen

Please submit your payment by credit card or wire transfer after you submit your Teaching in Higher Education Certificate Application Form. 
For payment details, please check the information indicated in the e-mail message you receive after you submit the form. When paying via wire transfer, be sure to include your name to enable us to identify your payment. Please note that you are responsible for paying any bank charges or credit card non-refundable 2.0% convenience fee.

4. Receive your ID number and document submission instructions
