Since 1982, the Graduate College of Education at Temple University, Japan Campus (TUJ) has offered a master's degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). This degree program is offered at TUJ's Tokyo Center and Osaka Center. A doctoral program has been offered at TUJ's Tokyo Center since 1988 and since 1995 at TUJ's Osaka Center.

Aim of our TESOL Program

At Temple, rather than favoring a particular theoretical paradigm, we aim to offer students a balanced perspective on current theoretical developments and to integrate theory and practice in meaningful ways through field-based components of the coursework.

The M.S.Ed. program is designed primarily for individuals who are presently teaching English to speakers of Japanese and other languages. It is a program of graduate coursework dealing with both the practical techniques of teaching English as a second or foreign language and the theoretical background relevant to such teaching.

The TESOL program supports Temple's institutional mission by promoting internationalization, linguistic and cultural diversity, teaching excellence, and integration of research with teaching and learning. Approximately 1,600 master's degrees and over 180 doctoral degrees have been granted at TUJ since 1982.
