The Master of Science in Education (MSEd), Concentration in TESOL is designed primarily for individuals who are presently teaching English to speakers of Japanese or other languages. It is a program of graduate coursework dealing with both the practical techniques of teaching English as a second or foreign language and the theoretical background relevant to such teaching. TUJ has offered a master's degree in TESOL since 1982, and approximately 1,600 master's degrees and over 180 doctoral degrees have been granted at TUJ since then.
The MSEd Program in Philadelphia and Japan
Both the MSEd in TESOL Program in Japan and the one at Main Campus are Graduate College of Education programs. Students in both programs receive their diplomas from Temple University, a fully accredited and internationally recognized school of education.
TUJ, which offers the MSEd and PhD programs, has been designated as a Foreign University, Japan Campus by Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

Flexible Program and Schedule
A flexible entry policy allows you to start the MSEd program three times a year (January, May or September) and to take up to nine credits before matriculating. The credits you earn before matriculating can be carried over towards your master's degree once you are admitted to the degree program.
A flexible program for completion allows you to finish the MSEd degree in one to four years. Beginning in Fall 2024, MSEd students will have the option to complete their study (i) in-person at the Tokyo campus, (ii) online from anywhere in Japan or globally, or (iii) through a combination of both options.
Although most of the online courses will be taught synchronously, three asynchronous online courses will be offered by faculty based at the main campus in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (“MC courses”) to provide students with an even greater global perspective and exposure to diverse educational practices.
The MC courses are the following:
- TESL 5613 Multilingual Students’ Literacy Development;
- TESL 5614 Current Approaches to Teaching English Language Learners; and
- TESL 5616 Designing Assessment and Curriculum for Multilingual Students.
Distinguished Lecturer Series
You have the opportunity to attend special lectures every year in the Distinguished Lecturer Series, which brings international experts in all aspects of TESOL, Applied Linguistics, and Second Language Acquisition to TUJ.
These lectures are designed to enhance students' knowledge of current pedagogical practices and to develop their ability to conduct high-quality educational research.
