Peter Morris is a lawyer, journalist, linguist, and Myanmar advocate who specializes in working with tech start-ups. In 2007, Peter studied migration and refugee issues at Waseda University’s Graduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies, and his interest in refugee issues eventually led to his involvement with Myanmar. After law school, Peter moved to the Thai-Myanmar border, where he wrote news articles about Myanmar and taught law at Peace Law Academy. Peter has also written reports on Myanmar-related legal issues and edited draft legislation for Myanmar’s parliament—particularly legislation relating to intellectual property (IP). IP is one of Peter’s legal focus areas and he has lectured on copyright law and other IP issues at various forums, including UTEM Law School in Malaysia.
After obtaining his bar license in 2019, Peter opened his own law firm in Irvine, California. Most of Peter’s clients are tech start-ups, and he also provides legal assistance to other small businesses, entertainment industry professionals, and non-profit organizations. On a part-time basis, Peter teaches law at TUJ and Spring University Myanmar. Peter also teaches a “News Topics” course for TUJ’s Continuing Education program. Most recently, Peter decided to work in-house for a non-profit organization established by tech professionals from Myanmar. The organization conducts AI research, builds large language models, and carries out educational and linguistic projects.
