Apply for a New Student Visa

The Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) application for your student visa will open on February 25, 2026, and will close on April 28, 2026.

All non-Japanese students who intend to take classes and who do not have a resident, diplomatic, dependent, or spousal visa must acquire a Japanese student visa. Students cannot apply for a Japanese student visa independently of TUJ. Please be sure to familiarize yourself with the visa regulations.

Obtaining a student visa is a two-step process. First, TUJ must submit a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) application on behalf of all admitted students to the Japanese Immigration Bureau. Second, you must complete and submit a visa application to your local Japanese embassy or consulate .

Step 1: Certificate of Eligibility

TUJ will submit a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) application on your behalf. Admitted students will receive the link to the visa application portal site by email. Then, you will be asked to submit the following:

1. COE Questionnaire Form
2. Passport—A copy of the Photo/ID and signature pages
3. Headshot photo (4 cm high x 3 cm wide)
4. Proof of Financial Viability—at least 4,000,000 yen (or equivalent in other currency)
5. Academic Record and Record of Completion of Previous Institution (if previously studied at a school in Japan on a student visa)

TUJ will submit your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) application to the Japanese Immigration Bureau. Upon approval, Immigration will issue a COE. Immigration's processing of your COE application and issuing of the COE may take six to eight weeks, sometimes longer. TUJ has no control over the processing time.

Step 2: Obtaining the Student Visa

While your Certificate of Eligibility (COE), is being processed by the Japanese government, TUJ will request an advance payment to be applied toward your tuition. Before we mail your COE, you must make a payment of ¥367,600. This will cover tuition for Business Fundamentals I (3 credits). You will receive payment instructions from the MiM Program Office.

If you are covered 100% by the GI Bill, you do not have to make the advance payment. Recipients of U.S. Federal Financial Aid may also request this charge to be waived by contacting tujbusiness@tuj.temple.edu.

Once TUJ confirms your payment, we will send the COE by email.

When you receive your COE, you can formally apply for your visa at a Japanese Embassy/Consulate . You should call or visit the website of your local consulate to determine that consulate's requirements.

Procedures may vary but, the embassy/consulate will typically require the following materials.

your Certificate of Eligibility (COE)
visa application available at the embassy/consulate
valid passport
one passport-sized photograph
proof of residence

The embassy/consulate might also require a copy of your TUJ admission letter and some may charge processing fees. Each consulate sets its own hours and requirements for student visa applications. Some require appointments or a few business days to process applications, while others will process your application while you wait. Some require that you send all your materials by mail.

It generally takes 1 to 7 business days to process your student visa. Then, a seal of landing verification will be stamped in your passport. A residence card will be issued on arrival at the airport.

Change your student Visa sponsorship to TUJ

You can change your visa sponsorship if you meet both conditions below:

The program at your current institution finishes within 3 months of the first day of the starting semester at TUJ, and
Your current student visa is valid for a month after the start of your first semester at TUJ.

Scenario 1: Residence card is valid for more than 3 months after TUJ starts
Financial viability ¥2,000,000

Scenario 2: Residence card is valid for less than 3 months after TUJ starts
Financial viability ¥4,000,000

Process (Applicable for both Scenario 1 and 2):

Step 1

If students' current residence card is registered to the local cities, they need to move to greater Tokyo area (Kanagawa, Chiba or Saitama) first and change their address BEFORE they apply for a new sponsorship.

1. Visit your current ward office and obtain a move-out certificate.
2. Move to Tokyo area.
3. Go to your new ward office with the move-out certificate and get the address on the back of your residence card changed.

Step 2

Prepare and upload the following documents "TUJ Visa Switchers"

1. Copy of Passport
2. Copy of Student Visa and Landing Permission in your passport
3. Copy of both sides of your Residence card
4. Proof of Financial Viability
(Scenario 1 - ¥2,000,000 or equivalent foreign currency
Scenario 2 - ¥4,000,000 or equivalent foreign currency)
5. Letter of Sponsorship (PDF: 107KB) (if applicable)

Step 3

Make an appointment with the visa coordinator office: visa@tuj.temple.edu

Appointments should be scheduled to take place about a week before the start of the program.

Bring the original documents listed below to the appointment with the visa coordinator:

1. Official transcript; if transferring from a language school, please also include attendance record
2. School completion certificate: graduation confirmation letter or letter of withdrawal
3. (Scenario 1 only) Notification of the Accepting Organization (PDF) , please prepare this document before appointment
4. (Scenario 2 only) Application Form for Extension of Period of Stay (XLS)
Prepare an ID photo and fill in the required information. This will be completed with the visa coordinator.
5. (Scenario 2 only) Work permit application (PDF) if applicable

NOTE:

Once students graduate/withdraw from their current school, they are not allowed to work part-time until TUJ starts.

NOTE:

The process is the same as for undergraduate students. The only difference is the proof of financial viability. MiM program requires a total of 4,000,000 yen (or equivalent in foreign currency) or more.
Financial viability documentation needs to be either in Japanese or English.
