Conditional Admission to the LL.M. in U.S. Law Program

If your TOEFL or IELTS score falls below the required level and you need more time to submit recommendation letters, you may seek conditional admission to the program. This status allows you to take up to two courses (a maximum 6 credits) before you formally apply for admission to the LL.M. program. After you are formally admitted to the program, the credits and grades of "C" or higher that you earned as a conditionally admitted student will count towards the 24 credits that the LL.M. degree requires.

Type of Admissions for LL.M. in U.S. Law

Note: Receiving conditional status does not guarantee formal admission to the LL.M. program.

LL.M. in Transnational Law

The LL.M. in Transnational Law (T.LL.M.) enables students with a first degree in law to develop expertise, special knowledge, and practical experience in transnational law. As a Transnational LL.M. student, you may take only international or comparative courses. You cannot take a course that covers only U.S. law. You may take elective courses in private and public international law and comparative law. You may complete your T.LL.M. in nine months as a full-time student, or in one to four years as a part-time student.

Basic Requirements

You must complete our three-credit International Law course as a prerequisite to the T.LL.M. If you have previously completed an introductory public international law course, you may apply to have this requirement waived. You also must complete 24 credit hours of additional study from our international and comparative law curriculum with a grade point average of 2.5 or higher. You must satisfy a two- or three-credit scholarly paper writing requirement by either taking a writing seminar or completing a guided research paper. If you have a law degree from outside Japan, you may complete all your studies in Tokyo; otherwise, you must study abroad for one semester in Philadelphia, Rome (only in the summer), or Beijing
