LLM for Foreign-Trained Lawyers (U.S. Law)

The LLM for Foreign-Trained Lawyers (U.S. Law) gives you the freedom to design a study program tailored to your specific interests. You may select any course, U.S. and international or comparative, among all the courses that we offer. You may complete the entire LLM in Tokyo, or you may take some courses in Tokyo and some at Temple's campuses in Philadelphia, Rome, and Beijing. You may complete your LLM degree in nine months as a full-time student, or in one to four years as a part-time student.

Admission Qualifications

You must have a law degree or a license to practice law in your home jurisdiction. You must also be proficient in English. If your English does not quite meet our required level, you should apply for conditional admission or consider taking courses in TUJ's Academic English Program before you apply to the Law Program.

Basic Requirements

To earn the LLM for Foreign-Trained Lawyers (U.S. Law), you must complete 24 credit hours of study within four years while maintaining a grade point average of 2.0 or higher. Most of our courses offer 3 credits and a few, 2 credits. You must take two courses: Legal Research & Writing (LRW) and one further writing course; other than those courses, you are free to choose among all the courses that we offer.

Academics

Conditional Admission to the LLM for Foreign-Trained Lawyers (U.S. Law) Program

If your TOEFL or IELTS score falls below the required level and you need more time to submit recommendation letters, you may seek conditional admission to the program. This status allows you to take up to two courses (a maximum 6 credits) before you formally apply for admission to the LLM program. After you are formally admitted to the program, the credits and grades of "C" or higher that you earned as a conditionally admitted student will count towards the 24 credits that the LLM degree requires.
