About Academic English Program (AEP)

From "Everyday English" to "University English"

Temple University, Japan Campus, Academic English Program (AEP) offers English courses to study English from "Everyday English" to "University English." We offer courses specialized in the academic English skills throughout the year that are necessary at universities and graduate schools. We also offer internships and courses for English teachers. Short-term courses in which students can experience American-style student-centered classes are also offered for elementary school students to university students of various English levels.

As its name suggests, AEP specializes in "academic English" and offers high-quality English education for students and working professionals with various goals. Every semester we offer courses that are about 10 weeks long, with Fall semester starting from September, Spring semester starting from January, and Summer semester starting from May. In addition, we offer short-term courses for students from elementary school to university level, as well as for teachers, held at the TUJ campus. These short-term courses are held either on weekends and national holidays or during longer school holiday breaks, such as in spring and summer. Students of any English level can take the courses, whether they have just started learning English or are already fluent in English.

To succeed as a “global citizen”

With foreign language schools and English conversation classes becoming popular all over Japan, it is becoming common to learn English directly from native speakers. So why do you need to study at AEP?

Being able to use English—the international lingua franca—nearly as proficiently as your own mother tongue is one of the foremost requirements for becoming a successful "global citizen." Learning together with people of various nationalities at universities or graduate schools in English-speaking countries is of tremendous assistance in doing this. You need to obtain a high TOEFL score in order to enter a university or graduate school in the English-speaking world, yet a good TOEFL score alone is not sufficient to achieve success in the academic sphere.

You need to learn not only "English necessary for entering university" but also "English necessary after entering university"—in other words, academic English. You can put this into practice at AEP.

Learning Environment

What kind of university is TUJ?

  • TUJ is Japan's only "American university" that offers comprehensive programs in English for degree and non-degree students.
  • TUJ fosters creative/analytical thinking abilities and communication skills through “participatory” education based on the small-class approach.
  • Classes are held entirely in English. Students become “global citizens” who can learn, think and express themselves in English.
  • Campus life support services and career support programs are readily.

International exchange through events and club activities

AEP students enrolled in semester-long courses can participate in a variety of events and club activities hosted throughout the year by the Office of Student Services and Engagement (OSSE). Students have opportunities to interact with foreign students through language and cultural exchange and through other events and club activities held in English.

Communication with Teaching Assistants (TAs)

TUJ students participate in short-term courses AEP offers for elementary school to university students as teaching assistants (TAs). They help students and participate in group discussions in class. Even outside of classes, you can always enjoy having conversations in English with them. You can learn English while enjoying communication with the TAs.
