Adult Study Abroad in Tokyo

An enriching and flexible 3-week program designed for adult learners to experience authentic Japanese culture and language through structured classroom learning, cultural immersion, and curated field trips.

The academic foundation of the program includes TUJ’ s undergraduate faculty and select continuing education instructors who are knowledgeable about Japan.

Instruction will include occasional spot workshops, practical insights and hands-on experiences. Participants will study in the cutting-edge metropolis of Tokyo combining classroom learning with guided excursions that bring the subjects to life. Home to a vibrant global city where tradition and innovation coexist, Tokyo is surrounded by rich cultural districts and easily connected by bullet train to Kyoto, Osaka, Nagoya, Sendai, Tohoku, and beyond.

Due to limited capacity and high demand, applications will be accepted during a designated period. After the window closes, participants will be chosen through a fair process.

Successful applicants will be contacted by email with an acceptance notification and invoice details by February 16.

Overview

Arrow-Medium IconFor Whom: The program welcomes a wide range of participants, including TU and TUJ alumni, parents of TUJ students, and members of the public who are eager to explore Japan and pursue lifelong learning. We also warmly welcome past participants of the Adult Study Abroad program at Temple Rome who wish to continue their journey with TUJ in Tokyo.

(Deposit: ¥250,000 non-refundable deposit due within 4 weeks of acceptance)

Special Discount: ¥20,000 program fee reduction for participants using University apartments

Optional University Housing

TUJ offers new, furnished student dorm rooms in Yoga, a nice residential neighborhood with shopping, supermarkets and restaurants around the station (9 mins walk from the dorm). The commute to TUJ is just 24 minutes door-to-door using the Den-en-toshi line from Yoga station.

ROOMS & FACILITIES

A standard single room is between 16-18 sqm and comes equipped with a bed, a private bathroom with a shower, a desk and a chair, an A/C unit, a small refrigerator, washing machine, a sink and a closet. Bedding (pillow, blanket, and sheets) is provided, but towels are not. High-speed WiFi internet is provided.

Participant Responsibilities (not included in tuition)

  • Airfare: International and domestic travel arrangements are not included. Participants are responsible for booking their own flights.
  • Accommodations: University housing is optional. If you prefer to stay in a hotel, self-booking is recommended; however, TUJ can provide information on special rates at select hotels.
  • Insurance: All participants are required to obtain travel and health insurance for the duration of the program.
  • Visa Sponsorship: Not available. Invitation letters can be provided upon request to support your visa application.

Optional Excursions

Part of the program is designed to give participants the flexibility to explore Tokyo and other parts of Japan on their own. In addition to the scheduled excursions included in the program, TUJ can connect participants with a local travel agency to arrange guided tours — either individually or in small groups.

A team of outstanding TUJ faculty and experts will lead the program, bringing their knowledge and passion to Tokyo, Japan.

PAUL KATES
Adjunct Assistant Professor (Programs - Undergraduate)

Paul Kates is an educator, trainer, and Adjunct Assistant Professor at Temple University, Japan Campus, and a former Director of Continuing and Corporate Education, with more than 35 years of experience across hospitality, retail, marketing, consulting, and higher education in North America and Japan. Having lived and worked in Japan for nearly two decades, his teaching and executive coaching focus on marketing, strategy, and communication skills, including negotiation, presentation, leadership, and organizational management. He draws on extensive industry and classroom experience to help participants understand how management decisions and communication practices shape service and hospitality experiences in Japan and beyond.

DAN SLOAN
Adjunct Assistant Professor (Programs - Undergraduate)

A veteran multimedia journalist with 17 years of experience at Reuters, he later wrote for Eurobiz Japan and other international media. He is the author of Playing to Win: Nintendo and the Video Game Industry’s Greatest Comeback and has also served as president of the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan as well as a board member.

YOKO HARUHARA
Continuing Education Instructor

An art columnist who has extensively written about Asian art for the Japan Times since 1997, focusing on exhibitions of Japanese, Korean and Chinese art and artifacts. Her publications include Artists in The Residence, a special publication of the United States Department of State for the American Embassy in Tokyo.
