Imagine the government of Japan for a century before the capital was moved to Kyoto 1,200+ years ago. Accessible by train in less than an hour from Kyoto, Nara is famous not only for its Deer Park but for World Heritage Sites that give a sense of the religious depth and splendor of that ancient era. In our first faculty-led excursion open to all TUJ Kyoto students on a first-come basis , we will be heading over mid-morning on Saturday, February 22nd to explore – up close & personal – the largest seated bronze Buddha statue in Japan, housed in the enormous wooden structure at Todaiji Temple.
Next, while offering special wafers to the (bowing, very polite) deer in our stroll through spacious Deer Park, we will visit 1,300-year-old Kasuga Taisha Shrine – guarding Nara as capital from its sacred site in a primaeval forest, hundreds of stone lanterns lining the path up to the shrine.
Expenses on your own include:
- Roundtrip Kintetsu-Kyoto Station/Kintetsu-Nara train fare 1,520yen
- Todaiji Temple entrance fee – 800 yen (700 yen if more than 30 students participate)
- Lunch (on arrival in Nara in shopping arcade) on your own & return to gathering spot
