Our first overnight trip for the semester, and indeed our very first overnight trip with OSSE for the Kyoto Campus, will be off to the famous thatched house village of Miyama! Nestled in the mountainous midlands of Kyoto Prefecture, Miyama is a historical town famous for its traditional thatched houses.
Here, you'll learn about the history of the town with a guided tour, take part in various local hands on activities such as straw crafts, mochi pounding, and herbal tea making, stay overnight in an incredible traditionally styled inn with an open hearth fireplace, and round out your last day with a half-day home stay experience. This will allow you to enjoy a traditional home-stay experience as you spend your time with a local Japanese family, and go hands on with the lifestyle of traditional locals. If you're looking for the true rural Kyoto experience, then this is as good as it gets!
