Application Requirements

Candidates must submit all the application documents by the application deadline: 10:00 a.m., Monday, August 26, 2024 (JST).

In order to apply for the PhD in Education, Concentration in Applied Linguistics, candidates must prepare and submit the following documents:

  1. Online Application Form: Fill out and submit the Online Application Form. The Online Application Form will be available from 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 16, 2024. 
  2. Application Fee: Pay a 15,300-yen non-refundable fee by credit card or by bank transfer. The payment instructions will be sent to you by email after your Online Application Form is submitted and confirmed.
  3. The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) : Native speakers of English must submit a score taken within 5 years prior to application. Candidates are expected to score above the 50th percentile.
  4. Official transcripts in English: Submit official transcripts of every college and university attended, including Temple University, which should be addressed to Temple University. Transcripts from all institutions attended must be included even if the credits have been transferred and are shown on the transcript of a receiving college or university.
  5. If your school provides an E-transcript, the E-transcript should be sent directly to phdadmission@tuj.temple.edu. Paper transcripts should be mailed to PhD Admission Office. They must be in sealed envelopes from the issued institution.

    Foreign transcripts (except for those issued by schools in the United States and Japan) require a formal evaluation before an admission decision can be made. To expedite this process, use the WES evaluation service (http://www.wes.org ). The WES Report will be sent to TUJ directly.

  6. Statement of Goals: Write a 500-to 1,000-word, double-spaced statement in autobiographical style that explains your interest in pursuing a doctoral degree in education. The statement should outline the following areas:
    • A research project you would like to pursue while at Temple;
    • Why the project is of interest to you, and;
    • How the project is of scholastic importance.

    The statement should be signed and dated and submitted to phdadmission@tuj.temple.edu.

  7. Three letters of Recommendation: Candidates must request evaluators to write letters of recommendation. Letters of recommendation should be obtained from evaluators who can provide insight into your abilities and talents, as well as comment on your aptitude for graduate study. The letters should be signed by each evaluator and dated. Each letter should be sent to phdadmission@tuj.temple.edu from the evaluator directly. Evaluators should put “Recommendation: Candidate’s Name (Last Name, First Name) in the subject of the Email.
  8. TOEFL® Test or IELTS: Non-native speakers of English must submit a score of at least 600 on the TOEFL ITP® Test, 100 on the TOEFL iBT® Test, or 7 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

Application Procedure

STEP 1: Fill out and submit the Online Application Form first.

STEP 2: Pay the non-refundable Application Fee of 15,300.

STEP 3: Submit all required documents as email attachments along with a Checklist to phdadmission@tuj.temple.edu. In other words, do not send the required documents in pieces by email but send them all together with the Checklist at one time. In the email subject line, write “PhD Application Documents (Last Name, First Name).” The PhD Admission Office must receive all required documents including the documents sent directly to the Admission Office by 10:00 a.m., Monday, August 26, 2024 (JST). Use the checklist to make sure that you have completed all necessary steps in the application process.

① Statement of Goals

② Test Scores
If you have a valid test score (GRE*, MAT, TOEFL iBT® Test**, TOEFL ITP® Test, and IELTS), save your score report in PDF format and send it to phdadmission@tuj.temple.edu. For those who have not yet taken the exam, the official score report (GRE*, TOEFL iBT® Test**, TOEFL ITP® Test and IELTS) should be submitted directly to the Graduate College of Education from the testing agency. You do not have to submit the score from your end. Put the date you have taken those tests in the Checklist.

*The institution code for GRE is 2906 (TU).
**The institution code for TOEFL iBT® Test is 9698 (TUJ).

③ Official Transcript

Application Deadline

Candidates must submit all the application documents by the application deadline: 10:00 a.m., Monday, August 26, 2024 (JST).

Confirmation from Office

  • Three Letters of Recommendation: A confirmation email will be sent when all three letters of recommendation are received. You must check directly with your evaluators if they have sent the letters to phdadmission@tuj.temple.edu.
  • All required documents: A confirmation email will be sent when all required documents are received.

After Application Submission

  • Final selection of candidates will be announced by email on or before Friday, October 25, 2024. The admission documents and information will be provided by email only to successful candidates.
  • Pay a 31,500-yen non-refundable seat deposit/matriculation fee by Friday, November 1, 2024.
  • The PhD New Student Orientation will be held on one of the weekends in November. The date will be announced by email.

Visa/Financial Support

Visa Support

We regret that TUJ cannot provide student visa support for overseas doctoral candidates because the PhD program at TUJ is officially defined as a part-time, not a full-time, graduate program.

Financial Aid

U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States can apply for Federal Student Aid from the United States. TUJ students who are either U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents can complete the FAFSA (Free Application for the Federal Student Aid) by visiting the Student Financial Services (SFS) website (http://sfs.temple.edu/) of Temple University Main Campus. Note that in order to be eligible for the financial aid, students must take at least 4.5 credits every semester. Read the SFS website carefully and contact the TUJ Financial Aid Coordinator (tujfinaid@tuj.temple.edu) with any questions you might have. The SFS contact for TUJ students is sfstuj@temple.edu and the Temple University School Code for the FAFSA application is 003371.

Standards of Scholarship

The following standards of scholarship apply to all students in Temple University graduate programs. A graduate student:

  • May earn no more than two grades of less than “B-” or more than one grade of "F", beginning with the semester during which he or she applies to the Graduate School;
  • May attempt the preliminary examination, in whole or in part, no more than twice:
  • Must have at least a 3.0 grade-point average at graduation:
  • May not graduate with an “I” (Incomplete) on his or her graduate record at Temple University.
