Chief of Staff

Dr. May-yi Shaw is the inaugural Chief of Staff at Temple University, Japan Campus. She closely collaborates with Dean Matthew Wilson to help TUJ advance its strategic initiatives, drive community engagement, and deliver a holistic global educational experience for TUJ’s diverse student body. She also manages a wide portfolio of tasks, including special initiatives, board relationships, community outreach, student satisfaction, staff coordination, and strategic analysis.

Dr. Shaw has worked at a number of global universities. Right before joining TUJ, Dr. Shaw was the Associate Dean of Students and Director of Student Life at New York University Abu Dhabi. She also served as the Assistant Dean at Yale-NUS College in Singapore and Associate Professor of Humanities Education at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. With over 10 years of teaching and administrative experience, Dr. Shaw has demonstrated a track record of excellence through teaching award-winning courses on modern humanities and East Asian studies, as well as leading acclaimed academic, co-curricular, residential, global exchange, and public engagement programs. Dr. Shaw holds a doctoral degree from Harvard University in East Asian Languages and Civilizations and a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and East Asian Studies from the University of Pennsylvania.

Born in the U.S. and grew up in Taiwan, Dr. Shaw has worked and lived in numerous cosmopolitan cities in the world, including Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, Kyoto, and Abu Dhabi. She is a mother of two third culture kids and one white Japanese Shiba who loves mingling with students with furry hugs and paw comfort!
