Date: Friday, February 18, 2022 12:00 PM - Friday, February 18, 2022 1:00 PM

Have you ever had something you wanted to say come out wrong? Have you ever shared an observation, but it was taken as a personal attack? Have you ever asked a question about something particular about the US or Japan and felt attacked just for asking? Have you ever jumped on someone who did not know what you wanted to say? How do you handle these situations?

Aggressive reactions make it hard for many students, especially nonnative speakers to ask questions or make comments in class. We will share how to make all ideas and questions welcome. In this session, the presenter will share a few real examples of instances when students felt shut down by others and we will discuss better ways for dealing with them. We draw on experiences to share better methods and practices in order to learn from each other for a more open learning environment.

WHAT WE’LL DO:

  • Discuss cases when students may feel like their comments or questions are not welcome
  • Share ideas for how to address comments or questions in a more productive manner
  • Share ideas of what we can each do to develop more active student engagement

WHAT YOU WILL TAKE AWAY:

  • Steps you can take to build an open engaging
  • Ideas for how to engage people more effectively
