Overview of TUJ and the Computer Science Major
In the past three years, Temple University, Japan Campus has seen unprecedented growth, including a 75% increase in its undergraduate student population. In the past year, TUJ has hired 25 additional full-time faculty and many new staff members. To support this success, TUJ is creating a new position: the Division Chair. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and supervising both full-time and adjunct faculty, these chairs will be responsible for supervising, organizing, and elevating TUJ’s undergraduate academic programs.
TUJ invites applications for a student-centered full-time Division Chair for Business and Technology. TUJ chairs are members of the faculty, with an administrative assignment. TUJ faculty contracts are renewable. In accordance with university standards and Japanese law, an employee is eligible for an indefinite term contract if a fixed-term contract has been renewed one or more times and the employee has more than five years of service.

Established in 1982, the Japan campus of Temple University (TUJ) is a full-service branch campus that educates students from 70 countries in English in its undergraduate programs, graduate programs (law, business, graduate education), and non-degree programs (continuing education and corporate education). TUJ students graduate from Temple University in Philadelphia. With the exception of language courses, all instruction is conducted in English.
TUJ is the oldest and largest branch campus of a foreign university in Japan. More details about TUJ are available at www.tuj.ac.jp. In January 2025, TUJ will be opening a multi-building satellite location in the cultural mecca of Kyoto, Japan.
TUJ offers undergraduate programs to a broad mix of nearly 2,500 Japanese and non-Japanese degree-seeking students who will earn their degrees from Temple University through the Japan campus. Every semester, additional students from Temple’s main campus and other universities converge on our campus for a short-term study abroad experience.
Located in one of the most dynamic cities in the world, TUJ offers thirteen full undergraduate majors ranging from Art to International Business to Psychological Studies. Our faculty and staff are international, with nearly 80 full time faculty joined by experienced administrators and many part-time adjunct faculty from the professions, business, and the arts. TUJ holds classes on the U.S. calendar over the course of a fall semester (15 weeks), spring semester (15 weeks), and a well-enrolled 10-week summer semester.
Overview of Positions
TUJ’s inaugural Chair for the Division of Business and Technology will oversee the following academic programs:
- Computer Science (BA and BS)
- Economics (BA)
- International Business Studies (BS)
- Tourism, Hospitality, and Event Management (BS)
- Math and Science courses
This supervisory chair position reports to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and is responsible for the hiring, mentoring, and review of faculty. They control discretionary budgets and set course schedules. Chairs will assist faculty major coordinators to promote student engagement in their respective majors.
In cooperation with the Associate Dean, the Chair will ensure the assessment and improvement of departmental curricula and instruction. The Chair will lead strategic planning, program review, and accreditation processes while ensuring compliance with Temple University protocol and policies. The Chair of Business and Technology will have the opportunity to cultivate TUJ’s fastest growing majors, create new programs, and collaborate with peers on Temple’s Main Campus in Philadelphia.
As part of their faculty duties, each chair will teach one course per semester.
Qualifications & Experience
- Terminal degree in one of the division’s academic programs or a related field
- Five years of full-time faculty employment or at least Associate Professor rank
- Supervisory experience preferred
- Evidence of successful undergraduate teaching
- Demonstrated evidence of scholarly or creative achievement
- Commitment to student success and campus community-building
- Budgetary responsibility and assessment or accreditation experience preferred
- TUJ is an English-language workplace, and fluency is required
