- Dates & Duration
- June 1 to August 1, 2018 (8.5 weeks. Specified dates include arrival, departure and orientation)
- Temple University, Japan Campus (TUJ) in Tokyo
- Number of Fellows
- Five to six per summer
ICAS summer fellows will work with TUJ faculty members on collaborative research projects as unpaid research associates and help with the production of ICAS related events.
Fellows will participate in seminars and discussion groups (both inside and outside of TUJ), visit embassies, media, businesses, museums and other interesting sights in and around Tokyo. Networking opportunities in the professional communities of Japanese academia and government will also be provided. Fellows can participate in tours and other activities which TUJ organizes for its own students. Past fellows have described their summer experiences with ICAS as rich and stimulating.
Fellows will assist faculty supervisors by conducting academic research commensurate with the faculty member’s research projects (where possible, fellows will be paired with a faculty member whose research interests they share and is consistent with the focus of their academic studies).
With approval, fellows may also conduct their own research, provided it is consistent with the general theme and focus of his/her supervisor. Students may develop special projects related to their interest if they do not interfere with other duties, especially if the project is in an area related to Japan (or Japan in comparative reference).
Some fellows may assist in academic symposia throughout the term of the fellowship. Fellows will submit regular progress reports to ICAS and their host institution, and provide a final report of their experience at the conclusion of the fellowship. Reports by previous fellows are available on Stories from Past Fellows.
