The Soul of Anime: Collaborative Creativity and Media Success

In this talk, cultural anthropologist Ian Condry will discuss his recent book, “The Soul of     Anime,”an ethnographic study of the people who contribute to the success of Japanese popular culture. Based on fieldwork in Tokyo anime studios, he argues that “collaborative creativity” among manga, anime, toys and fan production offers keys to grasping the forces of contemporary media.

Ian Condry

Professor of Japanese Media and Cultural Studies at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

Ian Condry is Professor of Japanese Media and Cultural Studies at MIT, where he has been teaching since 2002.  He is the author of two books, “Hip-Hop Japan” (2006) and “The Soul of Anime” (2013), both with Duke University Press, and both have been translated into Japanese by NTT Publications.  He is currently working on a new research lab, the Creative Communities Initiative, which looks anthropologically at how connections between online and offline worlds can provide new solutions to old problems (ccimit.mit.edu)
