The Collected Poems of Sagawa Chika

The Collected Poems of Sagawa Chika (Canarium Books 2014) translated by Sawako Nakayasu won the 2016 PEN Translation Award. This award-winning book has been heralded by the PEN Translation Award judges as “The first comprehensive English-language collection of this major Japanese modernist’s work,” and “is a substantive contribution to our understanding of twentieth-century Japanese poetry, and indeed global modernist poetics.” Sawako Nakayasu, critically acclaimed poet and translator will discuss the trials and tribulations of translation, the life of Chika Sagawa (1911-1936), and the role of the translator. She will read an excerpt from the work and will be signing copies of the book, which will be on sale at the event.

Sawako Nakayasu

Award winning poet, translator and performer

Sawako Nakayasu is the author of several poetry collections, including The Ants (2014), Texture Notes (2010), Hurry Home Honey (2009), and So We Have Been Given Time Or (2004) and as the translator, The Collected Poems of Sagawa Chika (2014), Kawata Ayane’s Time of Sky & Castles in the Air (2010), and Takashi Hiraide’s For the Fighting Spirit of the Walnut (2008), for which she received a PEN Translation Fund Award. Her own work has been translated into several languages, including Swedish, Arabic, Japanese, and Vietnamese. Nakayasu received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and Japan-US Friendship Commission Grant to name a few, and currently serves as the Arts Programs Advisor at the International House of Japan.
