Grant Newsham & Robert Dujarric: How should the US deal with China

Friday, June 10, 2016   19:30 - 21:00

Speakers:
  • Grant Newsham (Senior research fellow at the Japan Forum for Strategic Studies)
  • Robert Dujarric (Director, Institute of Contemporary Asian Studies, Temple University, Japan Campus)

In a recent article entitled “How to get tough with China” (co-written with Kerry Gershaneck), Grant Newsham argues that the US “approach to dealing with China from the Nixon-Kissinger era onwards resembles a forty-five-year science experiment—an experiment that has failed.” He concludes that America should be much more forceful in deterring China and must abandon the idea that a soft approach will serve the interests of the United States and its allies.

Grant Newsham and Robert Dujarric will have a discussion on the pros and cons of a new US policy towards the People’s Republic and we will then have a Q&A session with the audience.
