Contemporary Russia-Japan Relations
- Dmitry Birichevsky
Dmitry Birichevsky, Minister Counselor of the Russian Embassy in Japan, will outline some significant steps that have been taken in recent years towards the sustained development of friendly and neighborly relations between the Russian Federation and Japan. These include: regular and productive summit talks, an expansion of cooperation in the political and security sphere, interregional exchanges, steady progress towards the conclusion of a peace treaty, and Russian-Japanese joint economic activities in the southern Kuril islands. He will touch on the bilateral economic partnership within the framework of the 8-point economic cooperation plan, noting some of the major fields of cooperation and key projects. He will also discuss Russia’s economic potential and its implications for Japanese investments in the Russian Far East in light of the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok (September 11-13). He will conclude on why the “peace through sanctions” paradigm is not valid, the need to overcome phantom fears of the Cold War, and the importance of rebuilding the international order, which in Russia’s view depends on a fair and rules-based polycentric world.
