Course Details

There are two certainties in life - death and taxes. This workshop focuses on the latter and how modern taxation systems have come into being. From ancient times with taxes at borders, to how Marco Polo discovered taxation through gold exchange to the current day comparing different tax regimes of Japan, the US and UK, and their effects on regions and demographics. Participants will explore tax as state aid, how tax breaks can lead to retaliation in trade wars, new rules that tax policy-makers and multinationals are expected to comply with, tax as a social leveller (or not), and how mobility and connectivity allows individuals to shop the world for tax regimes. The workshop also explores the other side of tax - collecting it; which involves auditing, ethics and governance.
