Over the past several years, dozens of companies have been the subject of extensive investigative reporting in national and international media, 'naming and shaming' by advocacy groups and non-governmental organizations, criminal prosecutions, and civil lawsuits from aggrieved employees and communities. This unwanted attention has more often than not come as the result of suppliers engaging in questionable behavior such as abusing workers, polluting the environment, or taking unfair advantage of local communities. In addition, governments around the world are passing laws requiring companies to understand what is happening in their supply chains and to report that knowledge publicly. In light of this, the concept of business & human rights has become an important driver in corporate decision making for companies of all sizes.
In this seminar, we will discuss key international documents related to business & human rights including the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, the UN Principles for Responsible Investment, the UK Modern Slavery Act, and the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act. We will also look at ongoing litigation and recent judicial decisions that have helped to define the contours of corporate human rights accountability. Finally, we will look at some of the tools leading companies are using to address human rights issues in their supply chain and within the communities in which they operate.
