Japanese Society & Nonprofit Organizations (8 Weeks) (NGO212)
This is an issues-based course for those who wish to deepen their understanding of social issues in Japan and the work of organizations tackling them. Each week, participants are assigned online articles on issues and research on Japanese organizations to better understand the methods they use. Participants are expected to be active in class discussion, take part in group-work and make a final presentation on a current social issue and NGO of their choice. Anyone wanting to know more about Japanese society and nonprofit NGOs here in Japan is encouraged to join this course.
Sarajean is a Tokyo-based consultant providing program coordination, training program facilitation, and capacity development advisory services for institutions such as JICA, Japan PlatForm, the Give2Asia Foundation, the Center for Global Partnership, Morgan Stanley, Sophia University and others seeking to gain strategic advantage while better meeting community needs and promoting more effective civic engagement. Sarajean's most recent training programs focus on CSR and the SDGs, Unconscious Bias and Every day Sexism, Cross Cultural Communications and Basic Conflict Mediation skills development for international organizations and 2020 volunteers. She holds an undergraduate degree in sociology and a Master's in International Affairs with a Focus on human rights in East Asia from Columbia University. She has also earned professional certificates in Disaster Management, Humanitarian Response Management and Conflict Mediation.
