Introduction to Project Management (BPM101)
Project Management (PM) enables an organization to build something important - a newsletter, a new product, or an airport - and build it right the first time. Thus, it creates value for organizations, large and small, in every economic sector. For this reason, over the past 50 years, project management has grown rapidly into a business-critical practice, one with unique challenges, responsibilities, concepts, methods and tools. This course introduces the 21st Century practice of project management.
It offers students the opportunity to learn how to model project contexts, to plan a project based on these models, and to manage implementation based on the project plan. The main learning activity is hands-on: it is seeing how such project management jobs might be useful in tackling a project of your own. Other learning activities include reading, mini-case studies, and group tasks, including the chance to do some assignments using a collaborative, cloud-based project management platform.
This course can count toward the education requirements for PMI certification (PMP or CAPM) or serve as a refresher course for the Continuing Certification Requirement exam.
Textbook options will be discussed with the instructor on the first day of class based on individual needs and goals.
