Entry
Rules & Regulations
(please read carefully before submitting entry): All applicants must have primary creative control of the work entered - that means submissions must be copyright clear - and must have been enrolled in a college, university, or graduate-level institution at the time of production.
*Entrants must ensure that their works do not break copyright laws.*
All films should be less than 20 minutes, including credits (the Committee might be flexible to make some exceptions). For purposes of pre-selection, the Committee will accept only DVDs in or miniDV tapes in formats of NTSC/PAL. (All tapes must be standard speed.)
NextFrame Nippon is held in July every year. Submissions will be accepted throughout the year. Our deadlines depend on our ability to make subtitles. This means that non-Japanese entries (with dialogues) should arrive before December 31st every year (for the festival of the next year). For movies that already have Japanese subtitles, or don't contain any dialogue, the deadline is extended to February 28th (of the same year of the festival). Depending on their quality and the agreement of the filmmakers, entries arriving after these deadlines still might be considered for the following year.
Please keep in mind that screening copies cannot be returned to the entrant. Please send us copies of your work, and not the originals/master tapes. All copies will be destroyed after the festival screenings.
NextFrame Nippon does NOT use your work exclusively. This means that you are free to apply to other film festivals. Nevertheless, before submitting to NextFrame Nippon, take a careful look at other film festivals' regulations - if they allow you to enter multiple festivals or not. After submitting to our festival, NextFrame Nippon automatically reserves the right to use your work for screenings and PR connected to our festival.
NextFrame Nippon is currently not a competitive film festival. There are no awards, but we will try to promote your work to the international community in Japan. Many professionals are amongst our audience. In the event that you can personally participate in our festival, we will present you with a certificate of merit.
If possible, the entrant should provide a transcription of the dialogues, or a copy of the original script in English. Films in languages other than English must have English subtitles.
All submitted material both pre-selection and screening must be clearly labeled on the package and/or customs label with the words "No commercial value. For cultural purposes only". Any package which is not properly labeled and/or paid for and which incurs extra charges will not be accepted.
The selection of films is made by the NextFrame Nippon Committee based on quality of direction, story and visuals. All decisions are final. Only those applicants whose films have been chosen for screening will be informed of the jury's decision, either by fax or by email.
Please include the following:
- A completed entry form for each work entered at NextFrame Nippon.
- A film description (in English or Japanese), incl. the director's comments
- A list of awards or screenings in other film festivals, if applicable
- Transcript of dialogues or copy of original script (in English or Japanese), if possible
- A copy of your student I.D.
