Part-time Work Permission
Students on a student visa may apply for work permission, officially known as "permission to engage in activity other than that permitted under the status of residence previously granted" (shikakugai katsudo kyoka).
Regulations and Limitations
After you obtain work permission, you may work up to 28 hours per week during the semester and up to 40 hours (8 hours a day) during the semester breaks. This application process usually takes about three weeks, but it may take longer depending on the Immigration Bureau's workload. The work permit is a stamp placed in your passport. Your employer may request a copy for his/her records. The same work permit can be used in different work places and is valid for the duration of your landing permission. The working permission expires on the same day as the student's Status of Residence.
Prohibited Places of Employment
Students may not engage in any work related to the adult- entertainment industry including, but not limited to, hostess clubs, pachinko parlors, adult-entertainment internet businesses, escort services, and telephone-based dating services.
