Traveling Abroad / Re-entry Permit
If you plan on traveling abroad while studying at TUJ, you must apply for and receive a re-entry permit (sainyukoku kyoka) at the Immigration Bureau before you leave Japan. If you do not, your visa status will be cancelled at the airport upon departure. Please note that even if you have a "Multiple" visa stamp in your passport, you must still apply for re-entry permission in order to keep your visa status valid. The re-entry permit expires on the same day as the period of residence status does.
Please remember that in order to use a re-entry permit you must either (1) currently be taking courses at TUJ or (2) be registered for courses for the next semester. If you plan to travel abroad after completing your studies at TUJ, do not use a re-entry permit to come back into Japan, but instead re-enter Japan as a tourist (procedures for entering Japan as a tourist may differ depending on your nationality).
Required Documents to Apply for a Re-entry Permit
- Application form (available at the Immigration Bureau)
- Passport
- Alien Registration Card
- TUJ Student ID (Current semester sticker is required)
- Application fee (Single-use: ¥3,000 revenue stamp; Multiple-use: ¥6,000 revenue stamp)
Important Note
- When you use a re-entry permit to leave Japan, please keep your alien registration card with you and do not surrender it to the immigration officer at the airport.
